Is it worth it?

Searching the web, about to make a purchase.  I need to preface this, I suppose, with the fact that I have a Uberti '73 sporting rifle in 32-20 (24 in. bbl).  I have packed it many times, and the weight is not a factor for me.  Cimarron lists it as being right at nine pounds.

Now to the point.  I have been considering a Uberti '76 with the 22 in. barrel.  (Approx same length, and 1/2 pound heavier than the .32)  But I can only find them through Cimarron (1765.97) and BACO (1409.99)

I have a Cabelas near me that currently has a Uberti with a 28" bbl.  I have shouldered it, and don't find it burdensome, though I have yet to handle a 22" bbl model.

That being said, Dixie is offering the 28" model for 1,095.00.  As I'm still sight unseen on the 22" model, is the shorter barrel worth 3 to 600 dollars more as far as comfort, weight, etc?

All opinions appreciated.
Thanks,
Hugh

Keep in mind that the price on Cimarron's website is MSRP.  Buffalo Arms gets them from Cimarron, so their price is more real-world.  You might even get the same price from a local dealer, depending on his markup and factoring in what you will have to pay to have it transferred from BACO to someone local for for you.  You didn't mention what caliber you are looking for.  In case Buffalo Arms doesn't have it in stock, Cimarron at the moment I believe has only 45-75 in stock in 22" rifle.  They do have the other calibers in stock in 28", so they could get one cut down but that would add some time (all the rifles come from Uberti in 28".  Cimarron has a guy who cuts them down).   One other thought, have you considered the carbine?  It is 22" and weighs about .4 lbs less than the 22" rifle, and those are in stock (and cost about $15 more than the 22" rifle).

Call Taylor and Co., they had 3 of the 4 '76 chanberings when I bought my 2 on Sept. 28th, I bought the last 50-95, they could probably get you what you wanted. Call them and check prices.

Taylor's and BACO both have them listed at $1400+. I got one of the 28" from Dixie in .45-60 a few months ago for $1095. In my opinion, if the 22" 1876 is not the one you really really want and the 28" would make you happy, 6" less of a barrel and 1 pound less weight is not worth $300+. That's the way I look at it anyway.

mjn.....I want a '76 model in 45-75. period.  I held a carbine at Tx jacks a few months ago---no 22" rifle at that time, and just didn't prefer it's feel.  Is the quality of the DGW import (I know they're all Uberti) up to par with the cim. guns?

I love mine. Slick action, accurate, even has the caliber stamped on the bottom of the elevator. I have a Navy Arms 1866 carbine and a Cimarron 1873 carbine, and I can tell you this much, I think the 1876 is the best looking one of the group. Fit and finish is perfect. I also like the way the 28" barrel balances too. Easy to shoulder and find the sights. When I was looking to buy a 76, I too was looking at the short rifle and the carbine. I couldn't see the extra $$ for 6" and 1 pound difference. I was not disappointed. I really like the feel and balance of the rifle. Like I said, in my OPINION it isn't worth the extra money. Just make sure YOU will be happy with the longer rifle. Good luck! ;)

Thanks MJN.  I was leaning that way already.  You just helped the other shoe to drop.

Glad I could help. Let us know what you think of it and post a pic or two. ;)

Isn't one of the 76's made by Chaparall?

BACO still sells some. I have heard that Chaparall isn't even in business anymore (what I've heard) so I don't know about parts. From what I have read since the Chaparalls came out is that they are not as good as a Uberti in general, although some people seem to have gotten great examples. I do not have first hand experience with them so cannot say for sure.

Get the 28" at the best price you can find and use it for a while and see how it feels.  If it is too long for your liking, any good gunsmith can cut down the barrel for $100-$150.

I have the 22 inch Cimarron 76, and I like the balance a lot.  I'm not sure I would pay $600 more, however.  No biggie to cut the barrel on the 28 if it doesn't please you.  Cimarron cuts the barrels to 22", but they leave the forearm the standard rifle length.  I wish they would have followed through and shortened the forearm as it should be on the short rifle.  FWIW, I like Cimarron products in terms of finish and markings.

By the way, welcome to the fire, Hugh. :)

You never answered what is probably the most important question.  What do you plan to do with this gun?  Are you carrying it in the hills during hunting season or are you walking it back and forth to the range in a carry case?  I have many original 1876 Winchester rifle and carbines in all of the calibers.  Yes the standard 28" sporting rifle is heavy, but I still shoot them a lot.  I probably wouldn't hunt with one though because of the weight.  I love my carbines and because they are much more manageable, I do hunt with them often.

I really don't see a difference in fit and finish between Cimarron and any other Uberti firearm. I have 3 rifles, 1 navy arms, 1 cimarron, and 1 dixie gun works and like I said earlier the 1876 I got from Dixie has the best finish of all of them. Don't get me wrong, I like the markings on Cimarron guns too. I have 8 cimarron revolvers. I also have 2 Uberti USA revolvers and a Taylor's, so I have seen them all ;D I buy mostly from Cimarron because BACO has products in stock more often than Taylor's and Dixie doesn't have as many different items. My opinion is worth exactly what you all paid for it ;)

I think weight is all in the eyes of the one who is packing the rifle.  I have an '86 in 45-90 that is 9 pounds and a hawken that weighs in at 16 pounds ( put a sling on that one) and have used them for alot of years.  Now it is up to my son to pack the darn things.  So I have thought about getting a 45-60 or 45-75 in carbine length but I do like my long barreled 45-75.  Just some fleeting thoughts of the moment to pass on for what it is worth.

I had a 28 inch barrel on my 45-60 . It was a little on the Heavy side for all day HUNTING , SO i HAD IT CUT DOWN TO A 24 INCH BARREL , best thing I've done in a long time .

Weigh that "four" inch section of your barrel and see just how much weight you lost... I'll bet it wasn't much!
