Hi,

I feel so blessed to have a knife from all three of my favorite knife people ... Chuck Burrows, Josh Dabney and Dave Cole .... not to mention the cool sheath from Ned and the elkhorn grip on the same Bowie from Cowboy 316...

But I sent a note to Dave Cole a couple of months ago saying that I really liked the Gentleman's Knife that he was selling in the classifieds ... that a small knife would have been right along with the Will Ghormley 'Johnny Ringo' rig I was gathering stuff for ... and if it was Damscus with matching stag grips to match the grips on my Schofield, it would be perfect.

Dave Cole's reply was, "Why don't I make you one like that instead?"

So here is a Work In Progress that he sent me:

And before someone starts, I am totally aware that it was very improbable to see Damascus in the West, but here Sacramento, but a overnight steamer from Bagdad-by-the-Bay, it was much more probable ... especially for someone who was willing to pay for the very best

I am also totally aware that stag handles was more or less a Hollywood creation  ... but they were on my pistols when I got them. installed by a Territorial Governor, so I think I will keep them and the grips on the knife ....

PC or not, it's going to be a real fine looking set up once it's done.

Just remember to post lots of pics of the finished product and the rig once it's all together.

WWE, there appear to be many period knives with stag handles. As for the gun...sadly I have not found a pre-1900 gun with stag grips, yet. It appears that the gun found on Kid Curry when he expired had stag grips (1902).

Who is to say that any frontiersman with broken grips didn't carve some out of elk horn they found? Entirely feasible, no?

Yes very feasible, though it would have probably been easier to find a piece of wood and do it.

That's going to be a sweet knife regardless.

I am as sussed to see the sheath as the knife .... Dave has kindly agreed to make the sheath resemble the Cheyenne-ish look of the Will Ghormley patterns for the Johnny Ringo Rig ... complete with spots on the loops et al .... I am making the Johnny Ringo Rig (kinda), and sent him some of the pre-stained leather so it should match ...

And here is the thumbnail from the Will Ghormley pattern to show how it matches:

WWE your rig with Daves knife and sheath will be awesome when you are finished . KT

KT,

You are too kind ... my only hope is that people will look at the knife, sheath and pistols and not look to closely at the extremely puerile sewing ... LOL

Thanks WWE, can't wait to see the whole rig.Dave :)

Dave and all,

I have put this pic up several times on this website, but here is the completed project with the Dave Cole Knife on it ... it looks pretty good, as long as one does not look too close at the stitching on the holsters ... *S*

Dr Bob,

Thanks for your kind words ... were it not for the white thread telegraphing all my mistakes, I am rather pleased with the holsters ... and Dave and I are talking about the same knife, but with a 3 3/4" blade ... should fit the holster fine,, and the shorther one will make a nice 'patch knife' for a possibles bag that I am making for reenactment ....

Update .... (and bump to this Forum) ... I really like may Dave Cole knife ... enough so that I will have hime make me one just a bit larger then the present knife will become a patch knife, and the second one will go in my sheath on my gunbelt ...
