The 1" is not a Gatling, it is a Hotchkiss, uses the same round as the single shot Hotchkisses that were used at Wounded Knee.  I saw a repro of one of the Hotchkisses fire in 1996, it was impressive even with just plain lead bullets.

I think you'll find the Hotchkiss guns used at Wounded Knee were the M1875 1.65 Hotchkiss Mountain Gun.It's a very different round than the 1 in. Hotchkiss Revolving Gun fired. :) At one time there was a Hotchkiss revolving gun in front of the courthouse in Lewistown,Illinois.

Thanks, I thought they were the same round.

The Hotchkiss M1875 Mtn.Gun http://spanamwar.com/hotchkis165.htm There was one of these on that pawn shop show on history channel awhile back. The guy sold it to him for 30 grand, estimated value 40.

The one inch revolving guns were 1 pounders,37mm.They were made as large as 57mm.The Navy used them up to 47mm on ships as anti-torpedo boat protection.

Delmonico

The one I saw fired used a cut down 40mm Bofors case with the electronic primer machined out and the base of a primed 20 gauge shotgun used to set off the charge of black powder.

At our last NCOWS SW Regional, we had a feller bring a Gatllin' for demo.  I took a bunch of pictures and video of the gun in action.

Very cool.  I've seen a bunch of Gatlings and even fired one one, but they all were the longer guns on filed carriages.  I've never even seen one on a tripod.

Sorry to disagree, Del.  The ones in the movie were 1866 Gatlings (six barrels) in 1" firing the longer slugs with explosive rounds.

I have seen pics of both and the Hotchkiss (five barrels) is a horse of a different color.  I have no idea what was actually used in Cuba on that day, but those were Gatlings in the movie.

I also noticed that not all of the Colt machine guns were the 1895 "potato diggers" but were a later model (1906???) that didn't have the  action going on underneath the barrel.

My mind was never what it used to be.  I've been known to make mistakes...maybe five times total.  :D

Hey, did you call me recently?  We have two answering systems. One doesn't have a date / time stamp on it and the last message on there was from you.

Hey Forty Rod,did you ever find a picture of the Gatling M1866 1 inch? Found a decent one showing the hopper side in Wilson's The Book of Colt Firearms in the Gatling Gun Chapter.

Forty Rod

I have An American Legend and The Colt Heritage, both by Wilson, but they have nothing much on gatlings in them.  Actually, they appear to be identical except for the covers and Legend is a newer book with a few more pictures and details.
I guess I'm off to the library.

Danke.

Is this what you're looking for? I got this off of the Rock Island Auction website, sorry the pic isn't very large...
The first step of becoming a good shooter is knowing which end the bullet comes out of and being on the other end.

Forty Rod

I got enough "bits and pieces" pictures to finish the project.  I still have to assemble the parts and do the final paint touch up to finish it.  It's going to take a spell longer because I have a few other projects that are way ahead of it...like finishing the remodeling of the house, complete two or three "in the works" books, and such things.

Thanks to everyone for the help.  I hope the finished model is worthy of your time and effort.
