Does anyone know of a fairly high quality lever lock auto knife without a guard, with a 3 1/3" - 4" spear point non-stainless blade, and stag or hardwood scales for under $75.00 - $80.00?

I had a German-made knife like that (With stag scales) in high school and college, and have no idea what became of it.  It was tight and rugged, and held a good edge.

BTW, when did lever locks first show up in this country?

St. George

George Schrade invented a switchblade knife in 1893 - making improvements as the years went by.

In 1910, he and his son went to Germany, where he invented what would be called a 'springer' - with a lever-lock system - and sold the patent to a German firm (likely Hubertus).

'Good' springers of that style are popular and are still being made by Hubertus, Voss and others - they feature stag scales and usually a spearpoint blade - though other blade styles are seen - but all the blades of today are 'rustfrei'.

They're more difficult to get into the country today - not because of their automatic action - but because of blood pathogens in the stag - according to our Customs MPs brief about 'souvenirs' - and you can always believe an MP...

These springers have nail nicks and many have been imported without the spring as regular folding hunters - with springs being sold under the table.

Look at a good gun show or knife show and you should find a dealer who can help you find what you're looking for.

Good Luck!

Switchblades go way back. I've seen pictures of 18th century switchblades and one that may date from the 17th century.  They were quite common in 19th century America, but all the early ones I've seen use the button release. As St. George said, the lever release dates from the early 20th century.

Gotta be a lever lock.  Guess I won't carry it for matches.  ::)
