Howdy,

I really like the looks and idea of a transitional Henry.  I know that only a few were really built  and probably weren't used for real but I still want one.

Any body here shooting a transitional Henry?  Did you buy the uberi one or did you have a smith make one up?  If so who did it for you?  How much did it cost?

A local shop has a NIB Henry for $770.  I can do a layaway and then send it off to be converted.  Probably cheaper and I can pay as I go instead of loading up the credit card.

Thanks!!

Bill English "Happy Trails" @ the Smith Shop did offer the conversion...
He was still retailing and some light smith work since he said he was retiring last year.
He's done a little work on revolvers for me this year.

Off the top of my head I can remember but there are couple pards on the Henry Shooter list with theTransitional Henry.

Not sure if Taylor's has any is stock a present..

I don't think that he's doing the conversion anymore. :-[

I have and shoot two Transitional Henry Rifles.  One I got from Taylors, the other I built.  I'm not going to build another one.  Very expensive to do.
I really enjoy hitting the loading table and filling up a Henry from the side, and everyone says "where'd you get that!!"
They are a hoot.

PS:  Your best bet is Taylors.  Skip the wood fore end.  It just slides around.

Coffinmaker,

Thanks for the info.  When you say expensive, you talking $300?  $500?

Coffinmaker, if you`re just sittin`around and loafin`as of late why don`t you convert a `66 into a Flatside? I`d bet you can do it easily and the cool factor would be off the charts.  ;)

Smoke,

Somewhere between 5 & 600 bucks.  There is a bunch of work involved to make a transitional, in the traditional way.

FCK, As much as it costs to do a traditional conversion to a transitional, I've been thinking (OMG!!!).  I have to take a '66 apart to
build a Trapper for a customer so I'm going to do the measurements to see if it's feasible to remove the the fore stock locating ledge from the front of the '66 and screw in a Henry barrel assembly.  It'd be a bunch cheaper to do.
It wouldn't exactly be a Henry but would look fine from the freeway!!

I got mine from Tayor when they first came out and lot it the only thing I have done to it is install a second generation short stroke kit.  As far as the fore arm it does slip around but I installed a 1/8" brass bolt through the center rib.
And several time I was told I could not use the rifle because it had exteral modifications, till I told them what it was.

CM...thanks for the info.  A little more than I was hoping.  Which style is yours? a King's Patent" copy?  Or is it like the one that  had the gate on the outside that opened out?

thanks!

Smoke,

Both of mine have the gate that opens out.  It is the original "Kings Patent."  The later "Spring Ladles" were an "improvement."  With the original gate design, if you happen to leave the gate open (gasp!!), after you cycle the first round, the rest of the magazine tube come spitting out the side :o  Don't ask how I found that out.

I have a functional question about transitional Henry's.

Can you still lock the spring open by sliding the follower up and twisting the front of the barrel/magazine?

It seems like that would be a nice thing, to relieve the spring pressure so you don't mash up your thumb loading the mag like the 1866 and later models.  That's one of many things I like about the standard Henry.

Transitional Henry's usually have forearms added.  Once the forearm is added you have to make a follower that doesn't have the thumb piece so it will go through the new forearm.

Coffinmaker

The end of the barrel on a transitional Henry is not set up to turn.  The magazine spring on a Henry is not as "robust" as the spring in a '73 or a '66 and is no where near as tough to shove cartridges into.  It's really no issue, especially with the "opens out" original Kings Patent gate.  The thumb doesn't get bit.

I've never had the time to learn to post pix.  I suppose I should learn to do that one day.

FFL friend of mine has one for sale. New in the box.

I see on Taylor's website that they now offer the Transition in 44-40. Hmmmm.

Here are some photos I found on the Internet that show how the gate opens. Click to enlarge:
