Tomg, that bobcat hide makes a good-looking leather. Nice work on those pieces. Thanks for the pics and welcome to the forum.

This is the bag I eventually made. It's more of a possibles bag than a hunter's pouch.
Making the gusset with turned welts was a very tough job.

Thank you Skeeter.
Man you do beautiful work.
That bag is excellent.

Thanks, pards.
Tom,  are the straps of your bag the same thickness as the rest of the bag?
I doubled up the thickness for the straps, but maybe a single layer of 2-3 oz. is okay. What do you think?

Hi Skeeter.
2 to 3 oz. is just right.
T.C. Albert recommends working with 3 oz. leather when making bags.
My entire bag is 3 oz. leather.
Almost all my bags are 2 to 3 oz.
Its personal preference mostly.
Now when I made a strap for my marlin 336 I doubled up two strips of 3 oz. leather and sewed with beeswaxed heavy weight linen thread.
It took a few hours with all that sewing.

I did these saddlebags and canteen cover with 3 oz. veg. tan leather.

Now with knife sheaths, holsters and butt covers I use 8 to 10 oz. leather.

Nice craftsmanship Tom, your pieces all look period, old used and very authentic, thanks for sharing with us.

Very nice work Tom, your doing an awesome job on those.

The one thing I would point out about T.C. Alberts book that I forgot to mention. In T.C.'s book he doesn't put a welt in that knife sheath. Possibly some originals didn't have it and it was left out to be correct but for safety reasons it would be a big plus.

If I had written that book and left it out for an authenticity reason I would have at least mentioned and shown it as a safety option to the reader. I'm not knocking T.C. it is a very informative book and I recommend it but that just really jumped out at me as a big no no in knife and sheath making.

Thank you Ten Wolves and Cliff.
Thats a good point on the knife sheaths.
I do the leather antigue with easy off oven cleaner.

Skeeter Lewis

Tom, that's knockout work. It catches the rustic style of the originals. Great posts. And thanks for the info. Skeet
