While watching the Western Channel recently I noticed Lee Van Cleef shows up in a lot of obscure, relatively unknown western movies.  They said on there that Johnny Mack Brown has appeared in over 170 westerns.  It got me wondering who is the most prolific western actor?  Which actor appeared in the most westerns?  Anybody know?

It would be pretty hard to tell, a lot of folks worked as extras and were never credited.  Look at a lot of old films and look at the credits, short and simple.  Now look at a modern movie and watch the credits, even the assistants to the chef for the caterer get credited as well as the guy who drove the bus that hauled the extras around.

Lee Van Cleef shows up a lot.   In "Davey Crocket and the River Pirates" he has a few seconds on camera before being shot and falling in the Ohio River.   Cleef has just a little longer in "How the West Was Won" before getting "done in" by Jimmy Stuart.  Unfortunately after he became will known via the Sergione films he was used in a slew of really terrible Spaghetti Westerns.  Such a waste since he was so good. I watch them all at least once just to see him.  Quite a strain to make it thru some of them.   The WORST ever is "God's Gun"  >:(   . . . and it could have been a great film with him playing twin brothers.  He did his part of it fine. . . the whole film is the pits. . .  ::)

He was asked to fix his nose before being cast as a "baddie" in "High Noon" . . . . and it was good he refused to do it . . . his pinched cheek bones and hooked nose / mean nasty guy LOOK was his ticket to being a really great "bad guy" actor.
Beware the man with one gun, he probably knows how to use it.

Well Yak Canuct doubled almost everyone else in the 1930's plus acted a lot.  And he's one that never got credited often.
