I went to my local Tandy and, sure enough, they were switching over to Tandy Product Labels ... they had some Fiebings Leather Colors in Black ... the Salesman told me that in California they were not allowed to sell oil dyes by law, and this was the replacement for the Fiebings Black Professional Oil Dye.

I wrote to the person who sent me my patterns  ... he said that this was a totally different product, and to get the Fiebings Professional Dye.

Okay .....

Any suggestions from you fellow leatherworkers as to just where I can find this product....

Any help would be appreciated .....

Thanks!

Here you go... this is about the best stuff I have found... it may not be actual "oil" dye but is sure works better than the standard spirit fiebings... I get much better (more even) coverage and it doesn't seem to cause surface cracks or sepperation like the  standard will when the leather is bent.   It even smells like a leather product.. not alchohol

I've been using the New Fiebings Leather Colors since they made the change here in CA. Have not had a problem with the black.
I've been teaching my coloring classes with it and so far not one problem.

Freedom,

Unfortunately, I am one of those 'California Guys' and can no longer order the oil dye from them. I would hae to have someone from out of CA order some and then send it to me.  Any interested parties, please email or PM me ...

Skip, I can buy it at Oregon leather; I have a gallon sitting on my shelf unused. I don't recall what I paid for it, but they give me the discount that reserve for their "pro" customers. How I achieved that status is a story I need to reserve for a PM. I would be happy to ship it to you for cost. I will check to see if it's something the USPS will allow; if not then UPS.

Perhaps someone (WC maybe) will know the rules regarding shipping that product.

Hey Skip,

I emailed you this information, but since JD is kind enough to ship you his, I'll share it with everyone else.  If a package of Fiebing's Professional Oil Dye is intercepted within, or on its way to California, the sender could face Federal Felony charges for shipping a banned substance, even if you are shipping it UPS.  Even though it's California's stupid law, transportation of banned or illegal substances across State lines enters into Federal jurisdiction.

Well shoot! I did not realize it was a banned item to have. If UPS won't ship it, I doubt the USPS would either. I don't want to break any laws, even if they are dumb! PM headed your way Skip

It's my understanding that Fiebings OIL DYE and SPIRIT DYES are now illegal in California, they have been for some time along with several other products, if you ever look at the Tandy adds, you will notice where they advertise different products that  there will be a caption at the bottom of some products stating "CAN NOT BE PURCHASED IN CALIFORNIA!!!!!,  This is why I started using mostly natural dye's that I make myself, maybe you can get lucky and find another pard here locally that has the old spirit or oil dye that can spare a little, or like WC says try the new formula from Fiebings, I've tried there black, and it worked just fine, it gave me a deep black, with good coverage.

                        Good luck pard

Hi,

I PM'd JD and said essentially the same thing that Will has said ... that it is crazy to risk jail time for 4 ox of dye .... just not worth it to you or me ..... and I have other options I have yet to explore ... so I will do some checking around to see what is available ... might even do that rust thing Will does on lther leatherwork ..... but thanks for your kind offers!

The  warning from Weaver says thay the dye cannot be resold in California or displayed for resale  on retail shelves in California.
If some one gave it to you as  a gift  and not used commercially you could probably get by. You could ship it by bus  and be alright. It is illegal to sell in the  state not to possess or so I was told.
i cannot ship  it to California but I will get it for anyone that wants it  at cost plus 10% pplus shipping for those that dont want to use the Tandy dyes.Although I still do occasssional repair work ,I am basically retired but i keep my shop open and tax numbers up so that I can order for folks that need stuff. i dont mind doing it as long as it dont cost me anything and it save s money .
There is not a leather outlet or Tandy  closer than 150 miles  so I try to keep things on hand that folks need for repairs.
But lately I have been inundated with harness repair. All of it due to people not keeping the leather clean. they just use it  until it dries out and break some of it has never seen a drop of saddle soap and has been oiled on top of grime over and ever again. Its raelly nasty stuff.
But I will be happpy to hellp anyone that cant get something from Tandy   or needs something in bulk.Just as long as it you pay the costs, I'll get it for you and maybe help save a little money.
its just a thought, not trying to butt in or anything.

Don,

First thank you so much for your kindess.

And if all these options fall through, I always have y'all kind friends on this web page ....  but first let me see what I can do on my own ...

I just got an email from Siegels of California and they are having an inventory reduction sale
One of the items that is on sale is Fiebings Pro oil dye. Its at $30 afor a 32 oz. bottle.
i would guess that they are able to sell their remaining stock.
it looks like a good opportunity for you folks in Ca. to pick up some of the Oil dye while you still can.

Just happened to be placing an order and noticed that according to the Weaver catalog it says for commercial use only and can't be resold or placed on a retail shelf in California. Ya might call them and see if they can ship to Kali. I think you have to be a business to buy from them.

BTW, that Seigels sale price of 30 bucks a quart is not a very good deal. I may be wrong since I buy wholesale but I thought retail at Tandy is less than that.

FWIW,

I now have an hand-picked-by-WC entire side of pre-dyed leather ..... so am gonna use this instead.

So now I can concentrate on holster making and leave all that yucky leather dyeing for another time ...

For those seeking leather supplies or tools, I would hardily reccommend WC and Sandi @:

Sounds good, I hate doing black dye and I have a heck of a time keeping it from rubbing off on ivory grips or knife handles.

That's one reason drum dyed black is kind of handy; there are a few trades offs between that and veg tan though.

Try using the vinegaroon recipe Chuck Burrows (aka Nolan Sackett) gave us. It makes a better black than dye and it doesn't rub off. It's impressive. It changes the tannin in the leather. It doesn't work on all kinds of leather, but bridle leather gets great results. It's all I use for black.

Here's a link to the thread where he explains it: http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,11991.0.html

Here's a photo of one holster done with it. The belt was done with conventional dye and it isn't as rich a black.
