No way can I convince him that BP cleans up easily and he wants to try it and has asked me for a small amount before he buys some. Is he about to blow himself up (he is a very sensible guy and an experienced re-loader.

Perhaps he is a victim of the common misconception that Trail Boss is a Black Powder substitute. Trail Boss is not a BP sub, it is a Smokeless powder, and has the same high pressure spike of any other fast burning Smokeless Powder. I cannot speak with authority about the Old Army, but every other manufacturer of a Cap & Ball pistol specifically states that Smokeless powder should NEVER be used in them. Black Powder only, or a BP sub like Pyrodes, 777, or APP.
That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

Your alias is a good description of what could happen if you use smokeless powder in a cap and ball gun.  DON'T do it.  Tell your friend what he wants to do is dumb and dangerous.

Maybe he should read what is stamped in the barrel and check with Ruger first. They don't have to have the same steels for BP so who knows how strong the guns are but I'd hate to be the guy to fine out the hard way. Geeze, just get a Vaquero if you want to shoot smokeless and spare chancing ruining a good gun or a guy with a real bad idea. Darwin may be proven right again I fear. I wonder if he  uses a match flame to see how full his gas tank is.

I've been trying to drag him down to the range to see how easy it is to clean with Moose Milk and a Bore Snake.

Leave the poor moose alone and use water.

Although the ROA can probably take it, the C&B nipples can't.  They'll emit hot gas and blow the caps back at the shooter.  He'll see blood running from his forehead and his eyes are at risk in spite of any shooters glasses.

In a word, NO, don't do it.

Given a Kirst Konverter cartridge cylinder in the same gun, he may enjoy some fine shooting with heathen fad smokeyless powders as long as he keeps pressures below .454 Casull pressures.

I own and shoot a brace of ROAs.  They are very strong pistols.  I'd never consider shooting heathen fad smokeyless powder loads from their C&B cylinders.  If you want a magnum, buy a magnum. . .

Ok gang, it has been established that shooting TB in a cap & ball gun is dangerous.

It has also been established that discussion of smokeless is verboten here. I have tolorated it because of the calls for safety in this case. but it's time to move on.......
