I am making a butt cover for my shot gun. I am on my third try in making the end piece. The first one was too large. The second one seemed to be the right size but when I stitched it on it was too long at the bottom and it was bunching up.

I use brown paper, that you can get from any building center,( it comes in rolls) for making my first try at a pattern, when I'm happy with what I have, I transfer it to white poster paper, and cut it out, this will be your template, when making the end piece make sure you allow enough in your pattern for your sewing, if you don't your cover will be to tight, you will have to play with this to get an understanding of how it works, here is a link you might get some ideas from, I like to mold my end piece to the but of the rifle, but there are more than one way to make butt covers, which you will see in this link. http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,31402.0.html

Hope this will be of some help to you

Howdy Pappy,
TW has gave you some great advice! There are several ways to make a butt cover depending on how you want the bottom to turn out. JM gave me my first pattern for making a butt cover, since then i have made a couple different types.
What I like to do is to make my pattern, cut my peices of leather  and pre fit, making sure that the end plate is  the same size as the butt plate, then I will take a very light weight leather about 2" wide and cut it as if it was the last 2" of the big peice, then I glue it on to the leather butt peiece, cuting slits out at the left and right top corners this will take care of the excess leather, once you have done that, then you glue it to you main peiece, then if you want to sew it so that it looks as if it is sewn in that is okay, but you don't have to sew it if you don't want to.
I am not very good at explaining things, I hope in someway this will help, if you would like, you could cut those peieces and then call me and I would be glad to walk you threw it.
If I can be of help please feel free to pm me.

You need to learn to like all the little everday things like a sip of good whiskey, a soft bed, a glass of buttermilk,  and a feisty old gentleman like myself
