Get Treso nipples, one place you can find them is www.possibleshop.com .  One problem with the Italian nipples is that their sizes can be all over the place.  Tresos are consistent in size, enough so that Remington #10 caps seem to always work.
Check out my website at www.bpstuffllc.com for blackpowder shooting supplies and custom finished and tuned cap and ball revolvers!

I use Remington #11 caps and have been shooting CAS regularly with my Pietta 1858 NMA. I've used #10s as well but the #11s fit my capper better and work fine with my revolver so I use them. I replaced the factory nipples with the Tresos. I've gone through the same question and what I've seen over time is that the diameter of the #10s and #11s is the same but the length of the cap is different ("Noz," one of the members here, occasionally posts a comparative chart of different caps when this topic comes up). That matters on some guns. Apparently the caps can also vary a little from manufacturer to manufacturer.

In short, yes, you can use your 1858 with no problem. Yes, the Tresos nipples are manufactured better than the originals (and I, too, recommend them). However, you might have to compare several cap brands to find what works best for *you* on *your* particular gun.

Possibles and Track of the Wolf and others also have stainless steel nipples that are made much better than the Italian factory cones, so if you can't find Treso/Ampco, try the SS.

The first thing to do with any C&B revolver is to change out the nipples to Treso. I have done that for years and it stops problems before they get here.

I've shot about 2 dozen CAS matches with a combination of Pietta 1851, 1858 and 1860 and never had a problem with the stock nipples. But, I only used Remington #10 caps. CCI caps will give you fits!

Below: you can see me loaidng and shooting my 1858 at a match. (for all you boo birds....yes, I was shooting subs, I didn't yet have a sorurce for BP).

That said, I love the CCI caps to death on my rifles (#11 Magnum)
