I don't know why I didn't think to include everyone in the first place...DUH!!! But please help build an archive of
great old west photos we can all look at and appreciate. This board belongs to us all so lets build a library we can all use
and be proud of. So please post your photos when you have time. It will be much appreciated by all.

  Steve you're doing an outstanding job for the forum, I know this takes time to put together and just finding these old pictures can be challenging, you spoke of dates with the pictures, weill for me that doesn't matter, it's nice having dates, but just having the privilege to see these old photos is rewarding to me, in fact I enjoy seeing prints that aren't also in the history books, after all not all photos came documented, I know my family photos didn't, but by looking at them you can see where the time frame lies.

                           So thanks Steve, and keep up the great work.

George Heckle group with guns Marshall George Heckle is seated in the center. Heckle was Marshal of Summerville, Ga, from 1871-1873 and 1892-1911. We think the man sitting on the left is Will U. Redd, Heckle's deputy and later an Augusta Police Department detective. The original is a tintype.

Great old hunting/personal defense knife in the pre-Bowie style, very similar to rifleman's knives of the period. Forged blade and bolsters. Believed to date from the late 1700s to mid 1800s.
Overall length is ~15-3/4"; blade length is ~10"; clip-point is ~3". Very well used blade with heavy pitting as would be typical from skinning animals or perhaps fighting. Great old stag grips held on by three rivets.
NOTE: No scabbard.

Interesting to see how little somethings change.  That blade looks a lot like a 7th-8th century scramseax from merry old England.

A tintype portrait of a woman identified as Lillian Smith, the celebrated California sharpshooter, armed with a Stevens Tip-Up Rifle, ca 1875-1885, 2.5 x 3.1 in. Smith was hired by Cody to appear with his troop in 1886. Almost immediately, she was seen to be Annie Oakley's rival. During Cody's tour of Europe the following summer, the rivalry became public over perceived slights by European royalty. Smith left the show in 1889, and faded into obscurity.

Extremely rare tintype (ferrotype) hand-tinted photograph of young early postman - perhaps from the predecessor of the United States Postal Service - the United States Post Office. The medallion on his hat features oak leaves & the number 189. You will not find an earlier mailman image than this one.
Hand-written on the CDV album page from which this image was taken was the name Fred Kingman, but no address was listed. However, CDV images in the album were by Midwestern photographers - some from Chicago.

Measures 3-1/2" x 2-3/8". Condition is very nice with only a few slight nicks here & there.

Sixth plate image, illustrated in Katz book Custer in Photography, 1985, page 22. Half-length portrait of William Frank Browne with long hair, beard and wearing hat, mounted in original thermoplastic Union type wall frame with old but not period inscription on back of image William F. Browne Photographer for the Army.

Very rare 1/6th tintype of soldier cleaning his rifle musket, using string and tow to clean rifled barrel. Wearing overcoat with cartridge box/slinged and bayonet/scabbard on belt with percussion cap box.

Terrific albumen photo mounted as a cabinet card showing two clear-eyed boys (brothers, perhaps?) posing with their day's "catch" in a photographer's studio. Classic fishing image with the rods, the straw hats, and the clothing. Studio mark of "A. C. Isaacs, Madison, WI". Photo circa 1885. Actual image measures 5 1/2"h x 4"w (14 x 10 cm). Very slight warp to mount, else photo in fine, bright condition.

Those would be knickers.  Golfers wear them currently.  Were worn for many sporting activities in the 19th Cen.  Hunting, tennis, golf, cycling in pictures that I have seen.  Most are not that close fitting.

I think the fishing picture is also reversed, hard to tell with the lace up "lawn garden" shirt, but I don't think they made left handed bait casting reels that far back.  Also the belt appears to be buckled backwards.
