i been looking for a light smokless recipe for 38S&W . useing a 95 gr lead so far no luck
got a bunch loaded in bp would like some smokless for when a guy cant clean right away
i got 3 of them one is 1905 model one 1887 one i dont know

I've used between 1.8 - 2.0 grains of Win 231 & IMR 700X in .38 S&W loads using 100 - 125 grain lead.
These loads are pretty light & have worked for me, but i can't guarantee in all guns.

I will be giving a seminar (show & tell) about Smith & Wesson, Pocket* Breaktops, 1877-1900, at the NCOWS Convention in Kansas City.

I am not an expert; but I read his book.

It should be fun.

I should be fun.

A few sips of one of Dr. Bob's healing elixirs should ensure that effect  ;D :o

Don't you just love when you point out somebody's typo, and then they fix it, and all subsequent readers think you are nuts. ;) ;D

Here is my little Iver Johnson .38 S&W. Serial number and barrel markings identify it as being made in 1897. It must have been in a drawer or closet for 100 years before I purchased it a few years ago for it is in near mint condition. I have fired a hundred rounds of cartridges through it loaded by someone else with Pyrodex and it shoots fine and locks up tight. Just bought some Lee .38 S&W dies so I can reload some rounds with real black powder.

That's a really nice gun BC. Congratulations on that find.  :)

Pancho Peacemaker

Just got this in the mail.  It's been refinished and it has been cut (because of this, I got it for a very good price).

The barrel is only 1.75"  (The factory bicycle guns were all 2").

Parts all match and grips are original.  Mechanism locks up tight.  It's a .38S&W.  Serial number and frame latch put it in the 4th model range.  Not a collector gun, but will make a fun shooter at the range.

This is the shortest S&W Safety Hammerless I've found so far . . .  might be the ultimate in Old West CCW?!

Mine is a five shot hammer less Smith & Wesson 38 cal. nickle plated, Lemon squeezer, it was made in 1886.and is in great condition there is surface wear, but the action is nice and tight, the pard that gave this gun to me 46 years ago, carried it with him in the early nineteen hundreds. The tan colored holster came with the gun and is from the very early nineteen hundreds to just around the turn of the century, but in like new condition, he said he hardly ever used it, and always carried it in his pocket, the other picture is a holster I recently made for it.

Awesome looking gun Pancho.

Books. I hope you video tape the presntation you give. I won't be able to make it to the convention this time around and would love to see your discussion. I'm growing very fond of the pocket pistols and breaktops especially. If you make a video of it please post it on the NCOWS site so we can all watch it. It would be a great contribution to the page.

Thanks.

It would be great idea if we could record them all.  Too bad Ottawa Creek Bill isn't going to be there. He's a heck of a cinematographer!

Ten Wolves;

You should come to the NCOWS convention and bring your 1st model S & W Hammerless.  It is one hole in the presentation that I really didn't expect to fill.  (That and the 1st model .32 da: They only made 30 of those.)

Tascosa Joe and Books OToole , I appreciate your comments, I doubt I will be able to make it this year, but will try to see if I can in 2012, these little guns are really something, I know there must be others like mine, but I haven't seen on yet in all the years I've owned this one, the original owner told me he like the lemon squeezer for its ease of carrying, no hammer to catch on his clothing, that's why he hardly ever used the holster, some of the loss of plating is due to me using Hoppy's #9 solvent, before I new the damaging effects that a copper removing solvent can cause on nickle plating, otherwise it was in pristine condition.

For those of you who were not able to attend the NCOWS convenion, and therefore missed my seminar, I have written down the pertinent poop in an article for The Shootist.  The article contains photographs by Tom Spanton.  It should be out within a month.
