"Mid range" CAS buffalo carbine

Looking for opinions:

Some of the CAS clubs I've been attending are hosting "Mid range" matches or "Cody Dixon" matches.  If you haven't shot these, it involves traditional rifle caliber long guns (45-70, etc...), usually shot off hand at modest distances (75 to 200 yards).

I find that most of your serious BPCR buffalo guns that weight 11 to 13 pounds are just not a good choice for this (like my Browning BPCR).  While those rifles are a joy over cross sticks or in position shooting, they just weigh to dang much to be off hand shooting all day.

I'm considering picking up a light weight rifle or carbine  that will be a little lighter and shorter for these mid range matches.  I'm thinking of a rifle that was designed for off-hand shooting.  It should have a barrel no longer than 22" and weigh no more than 8 pounds.

It'll need to be in 45-70, cause that is my poison of choice.  (And yes, I know the light rifle will kick more . . . that's what buttpads are for.)

Three I'm looking at:

1)  A Winchester/Miroku 1886 Extra Light carbine.

2)  A Pedersoli Sharps Carbine

3)  A Winchester/Miroku 1885 Hi Wall Trapper.

Any other thoughts about these three or perhaps another rifle I need to think about?

I like the uberti 1885 configurations more than the recent mirokus I've seen. You might give them a look.

1895 Marlin.

I agree with the Marlin 1895, from the specifications you set forth.

An 1876 in .45-75 might be a viable alternative.

In spite of what I wrote above, I like my Shiloh .45-70 and my 1885 High Walls much more...!

How do the Shiloh Sharps compare with the Pedersoli Sharps in terms of quality?

(I've handled and fired the Pedersoli & have no live fire experience with the Shiloh.)

Rowdy,

I like that idea, however the only Rolling Block Carbine reproductions I've seen are in pistol calibers.  Does anyone make one in 45-70?  If so, will it handles modest smokeless loads?

Slim,

Thanks for the link.  That hunter carbine would fit the bill, but it is a scaled down "1/3" size action.  This would be similar to the "little Sharps" others are marketing.  While these are neat rifles, I like to keep my reproductions as period correct as possible.  I'd prefer to stick with an reproduction action that is true to the original design's size and dimensions.

Pedersoli offers a 28 inch round barrel on the Sporting RB . They offer it in 30-30 or 38-55 it is a full size rifle and weighs a little over 8 pounds . The 38-55 will be a real Sweetheart to shoot . I think we are luck people having all these choices , either choice will be fun to shoot .

After much debate and searching, I found a nice Pedersoli Sharps.  It is fairly unique:  It's a '74 Sharps carbine, but has double set triggers, an MVA tang peep, and has a custom 22" heavy barrel by Gary Reeder.  It should be here in a few weeks.

I'd say from my own experience that ANY extra money spent on a Shiloh over a Pedersoli is money very well spent.  Those rifles are as extraordinary as the crew that builds them.

Which I why I bought a Shiloh rather than the Pedersoli... All of which means, extraordinary American workers are receiving their Salaries at Shiloh...!
