I don't know how the show was, but I do know my Filigree rig didn't win. A Sheridan carved rig by Jim Jackson took 1st place.

Aww. I still think it was top in my book, WC. I suppose the LeatherCrafters Journal will have pics sometime in the next year.

Boy, if something beat your filigree rig, it must really be amazing. I hope to see a picture of it,'cause your rig rocked!

The problem with judging in general is that it's very subjective in nature. Opinions are just that, opinions, and the possibility of politics is always there. Ford-Chevy and Coke-Pepsi are good examples of the subjective nature of judging.

It's difficlut to tell by photos alone, but I would put #2 above #1, and yours above both of them WC, but then I'm sure I have a certain amount of bias as well.

Opinions are like noses, everone has one, and they are all different. Thanks for including the photos WC.

Your rig looked great WC!... I thought that was yours.

I didn't recognize anyone there except Cowboy316... so I did get to meet someone.

I would have to say that the 2nd place rig was one of the most impressive things I have ever seen... LOTS of work! Even the shell loops were braided!! I was told it took second place because of the slack that was left where the rig attached to the belt.... But the work to filigree all the tooling, the stingray background and EVERY single edge was buckstich braided!... Even the thong was braided.

The fist place was quite impressive and very clean. It did have a more functional look to it.  My wife walked right up to it and noticed that the spots at the end of the shell loops had been relocated higher than origanlly intended and the prong marks were left lower...  I'll bet that just about made the maker cry..  :'( But it was an AWSOME rig... Judges really had there work cut out.

There was lots of really nice work. My wife really like one of the pairs of chaps. It had pockets and Lisa said "why don't my chaps have a pocket? ;D SO I may be adding pockets  ::) :D There was a stingray padded saddle seat and I had to do some reall talking or I would have been making her a saddle with a stingray seat ;D ;D

There was a lot of nice leather and some of the cutom knife makers had head knives that would cut 15oz skirting like  your mama's good scissors cut  paper ;D...of coarse for $250 I think I'll just sharpen mine a little more often. :P

The Stohlman was won by Bob Klenda. From Bob's website "Bob Klenda began working with leather in 1959, completing his first saddle in 1961. Today, after having made nearly 500 saddles, Bob continues the tradition of making only the highest of quality saddles, chaps, and  accessories. Bob has shown his work consistently at these shows, as well as, the "Dry Creek Art Fellowship" show in Sedona, Arizona, the "Elko Poetry Gathering Saddle Show" in Elko, Nevada, The Art of The Saddle Maker show at the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame, and at art shows around Colorado and Wyoming.   Bob is recognized as a master saddle maker by the Colorado Council on the Arts and works consistently with the Council to foster the Art of Saddle Making.
The Colorado Saddle Makers Association (CSMA) http://coloradosaddlemakers.org  was formed in 1991.  Bob Klenda has been an active participant in CSMA, currently serving as its President. Bob spends considerable time and effort organizing and speaking at CSMA seminars and teaching leather carving.   Bob is also a member of the American Saddle Makers Association and supportive of their program.  Bob's work with 4-H leathercraft has prompted many young people to undertake making a saddle. I agree your rig was first place material. Keep with it, you're definitely at the top. The judges obviously preferred a different style of leather this year.

Wayne, I've entered contests before. I had one piece refused entry so they didn't have to judge it next to the one they wanted to win. It all depends on the judges and what they want to see. Don't take it to heart. Just enter next year. You're one of the best.

Added later..... Not to disparage the judges or insinuate that they were biased. Just stating that WE would have been biased..
