QuoteI suggest 45 Colt. Average cost is roughly $5 / box (50)

A typo or am I about to be eternally in your debt, sir?

Springfield Slim

He said 45 is about 5 bucks a box LOWER than 44-40. I have a Henry in 44-40 and a Henry carbine in 45 Colt. The 44-40  works much better with BP, both work fine with smokeless.

Howdy

Even though ALL my CAS rifles are chambered for 44-40, if I was restricted to buying commercial ammo, I would go with 45 Colt. My experience is that 45 Colt is simply more readily available over the counter than 44-40 is. I load my own Black Powder 44-40 ammo, and there is no question it performs better than 45 Colt with Black Powder. But if I was going Smokeless, I would have no problem with 45 Colt.
That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

This week I took the side plates off of my 45 Colt 73.  First time in 2 years.  Only shoot it with black powder!  It was quite clean.  A little crud in the corners, but it appeared to be dirt, more than BP fouling.  I don't shoot a lot, but the fouling with 45 Colt has not been a problem for me!  I do shoot a full case compressed load.  When I clean there in not even a great amount of fouling on the bolt.

I have all my rifles and pistols in the 45's, my '73,'66, and '60 in 45 Colt (rifles or carbines), '58 Remmies, '75 Schofields, '71-2 Open tops, and USFA and Colt SAA's in 45 Colt with no problems that I would call serious troublesome. My 1895 Marlin Cowboy and Springfield Trapdoor both in 45/70. Went through alot of guns and some have been different calibers but I always seem to work back to the 45 Colt. While there are times when commercialcant be found without ordering of the internet or out of a catalog. I have seen Ultramax going for 50 dollars a box of 50 to Black Hills being 35 dollars and up for a box of 50. In the last few days I ordered a case of 800 rounds and paid 399.99 with free shipping. I wont mention any names or anything on this post but anyone who wants can send me a pm or email and I will give you the scoop. I am not tied to this seller in any way beyond he had a product for sell and I was buying. I guess you would have to put me down as a vote for the 45 Colt but in all fairness I havent had any arms in 44/40 or 44WCF. Just my opinion, Regret Chancy

.44-40, then have it lined to .38-40. I saw one of these for sale last year somewhere... Missouri, Tennessee... somewhere back thataway, and still kicking myself for not buying it.
