I have recently purchased a Colt Police Positive revolver with a 4 inch barrel in 38spl caliber. It has a serial #6113XX. It retains most of the bluing. The backstrap has developed a patina on it. I was curious to know when it was manufactured.

Well it's older than me by that much.

Dirty Brass

I've been looking at a couple of those on GB - trying to decide what would be a fair amount to spend on one.

St. George

Depends upon the age of the piece - and the caliber.

Those built in the late '20's are neat little revolvers - harder to locate in .38 Special than in .38 S&W.

They have square butts and hard-rubber grips with a stylized 'C'.

After the '30's - the round butts were common, as was .38 Special chambering - and those are 'everywhere'.

Prices will run from $125 and up - they're sort of priced like S&W Model 10's - so it all boils down to 'condition, condition, condition' and you go on from there.

If you're located near larger cities - it's quite possible you'll find ex-police revolvers in profusion - and they hung on in active service in rural areas, too.

Some are agency-marked - common if issued - others are 'clean'.

Good Luck!

The two I'm looking at have a 424xxx, and a 895xxx serial number. Both look to be in VG condition. Different models I think, looking at the screw count on the frames....

1934 and 1966, respectively.

Mine is a 38S&W, built in the 30s from memory. It was used by Broken Hill Proprietary Limited (BHP, Aussie mining giant) for bullion escorts, then By the Commonwealth Bank as a teller's gun, before the tellers were disarmed, as a lot of them wern't up to it) and then used continually as a private security guard / private investigator's sidearm until about 2005. Thats a long life for a gun carried daily. It is fun to shoot, but is so small, it is a bit of a handful with factory loads.

Its a keeper!
All my cowboy gun's calibres start with a 4! It's gotta be big bore and whomp some!
