Military Coopers

Can anyone give me information on Coopers (barrel makers) in the Military?  (ie.  what branch, rank, did every post have one, etc)

Coopers would have been civilians working for the Quartermaster Department. 

Most posts would have had a cooper since barrels were used for everything, from holding water to shipping containers.  Sometimes goods would be delivered to a post in barrels, then the barrels would be disassembled for easier packing and sent back for use again.
