The plain jane version is my favorite at the moment. I look at it as a blank slate, suitable for personalizing.

Hey Fingers, do you shoot Black Hills .38 Special in those guns?

Never tried Blackhills.  Used som Magtech's till I got all my reloading supplies for the .38 spcl.  Now all i use are Pinnacle or Goex reloads.

From reading other posts, I see that the Man with No Name is basically a Richards navy barrel on a open top frame and open top cylinder.

I know it has the conversion plate, but does the Richards Mason conversion have the cylinder dimension and frame of an open top or of a 51 navy?

Justician, the Uberti '51 R-M is basically designed to be like a conversion of the percussion gun, however it is not exactly the same in its dimensions. I know the 1860 conversion is larger than a percussion gun (to allow for a cylinder large enough to be chambered in a six-shot .45), and the '51 may also be slightly larger.   Percussion barrels will not fit on the conversion frames.

Thanks Abilene,

I was wondering if the Richards Mason navy barrel would fit on an open top. If so, I could use my ejector and wedge and just add the barrel and sight to have what would look like a 51 conversion.  Not as cool looking as the Man with No Name, but easier for my aging fingers to eject spent shells.

I think there is a great misunderstanding here as regards nomenclature. The "Open Top" is the Colt '72 model and NOT just any Colt style conversion w/o a top strap. There is a difference. The breech cones are different mainly.  ;)

Yes, a '72 OT barrel will fit on the R-M, and an R-M barrel will fit on a '72 OT.  That is the '51 R-M, I mean.  (some fitting required, of course). The '60 R-M is also made in .38 but I'm not sure if a '60 R-M barrel will fit on the OT or not.  If ejecting brass is your only concern, you know that the MWNN has a two-piece rammer that easily comes apart to provide a brass ejector tool.  Also, if you put a '51 R-M barrel on the OT frame, you will have no rear sight (which may be fine with you), and you will have what looks a lot like a '51 R-M.  In that case you could save a lot of money by just buying the R-M, and you can get an aftermarket snake installed on the grip if you wish.

Update: upon re-reading your post, I'm thinking you already have a '72 OT.  So yeah, you could add the '51 barrel to it if you wished (I know a guy who did that - looked cool) but you would have no rear sight unless you dovetail one in.

Abilene,

I have three 71 open tops and a wife of 28 years, so the option is a new barrel for my spare, not a new revolver (too much invested and too old to be trained by another one, so a new wife is not an option).

I like the MNN but piecing together all the parts to create it would be pretty expensive, while the RM would be just a barrel and bead sight. Plus I can go with a shorter barrel.  As for the rear sight, my fellow shooters tell me I obviously don't use it anyway.

Thanks again,

Justician
