Sailors have always enjoyed putting the personal touch to their uniform, and getting that "salty" look.  Most of us contented ourselves with "liberty cuffs" that could be turned up for show. The tradition actually dates way back, and fancy stitchwork was common on Navy uniforms during the Civil War, as many sailors made their own clothing.  The Navy's official attitude has varied from tolerant to "your not leaving the ship in that clown outfit." depending on the command and the time period.

Here is a really beautiful custom set of "tailor mades" from a YN3 who served aboard the USS Buffalo.  Most likely made in the orient.

While this uniform has been suggested as 1917, the shape of the yoke in front puts it as Spanish American War.  Of course, the sailor could have remained in service far past that period.

Griz - that's some really cool stuff!  You gonna wear it for the color guard next year?  We would be honored if you do.

I wish it were mine!  No, I think I'll have to wear something more regulation - and affordable! ;)  Sure is a neat uniform, however. :)

The USS Buffalo was in service during the SAW and until the early 20s.

Nice ole uniform. Looks like it has been folded right side (wear) out. I still have my donald duck (flat) hat. They made us quit wearing them in "61. Spent 11yrs active in the USN.

Yep, I guess they were not overly popular with many, thus the name Donald Duck!  The hat worn during the SAW/WWI period was a bit different as you can see from the pic.  It was also larger in diameter (11+"), set flat all the way round, and was referred to as a Pie Pan! :)

Thanks for your service. :)

That is a Cracker Jack looking suit. That would be a prize for any sailor to have in his sea chest. I remember several years ago seeing Sailors and Marines who went to Hong Kong took thier blues and got them modified with Dragons just under the cuffs that could be rolled up to show they were China Sailors at heart. There were other things that were done but right now I can not remember them. Never had the Chutzba to do that to my uniforms myself. I could not afford to replace my Blues Greens or Whites. Wife and three children in those days took every penny I had.
