Wife and I went to an antique store today and while rummaging around I found a small wooden box...inside were numerous leather awls and two knives....got the bunch for $15.00.  I also found a real nice set of calipers, a very nice wooden handled strop, and a set of clippers...these were $10.00 each

Very good find!! And a good price to boot!

I love the few vintage tools I have. It makes me appreciate them that much more, knowing that I am still using the tool for its intended purpose, even after all the years.

WC is right..So. Cal. is not the place...actually I think the best places for leather tools is in Iowa..and Lancaster, PA

I almost missed these tools..they were in a larger wood tool box and I just happened to move the smaller wooden box to get a better look see at the other larger tools...then I saw the label.."Misc. leather tools"

Being here where the Visalia saddle was made, ive propbably seen alot noy knowing what they were. There used to be a couple really fine leather makers here,Bill Enos wa one and Ben Castilla was another, there is still one here Circle N ranch, don't make as much as they used to.Bill and Ben are gone. The antique stores always have saddles from old makers here.If i would have known at the time what it was i would have bought the stitching pony(?) i saw awhile back,i vaguely had an idea what it was, should have snagged it on the gut feeling.
Bunch a ole scudders!

You are far luckier than I, my few estate auctions and antique store trips were always fruitless.  When I do find an old tool that I like it is my desire to actually use, though sometimes sparingly.  If you will look at the Horseshoe Brand version of a divider style compass you will see that it is a copy of an old style that Osborne used to make.  As beautiful and nice as the Horse Shoe brand is, the really old and well worn Osbornes sell for much more on Ebay.  I will take my old wore out leather thickness gauge over the new machine shop versions any day.  Who ever came up with the idea of using a machine shop dial guage for measuring leather thickness, its way slow and total overkill for the job to be performed.  But then there were the old gimmick tools around in those days also and old dummy here has bit on those to!  I guess some of my older Tandy stuff, bought in the sixties and seventies just might be closing in on antique by now!

Good find Outrider.  I am always looking for old usable leathersmithing tools.  I have an old cobblers hammer and an old caliper that I use all the time makes it more fun.

Outrider and WC, you both are right, California isn't the place for finding old antique tool.
