What's hard to believe...and harder to take is how long ago so many of them "crossed the Great Divide"!     Many of these I saw on Saturday morning T.V. (re-)runs.   Hoppy was an especial favorite of mine.  But so were so many others.  Glad to see a few of them are still around, even if retired.  Pity, folks are more interested in vampires and other weird stuff than Westerns.  And the few Westerns we see have ramped up the gratuitous violence and gore beyond what's necessary.  Ah, well, just gettin' old, I reckon.

Ken Curtis aka Festus was one of the original "Sons Of The Pioneers." The man could really sing in a beautiful tenor voice.

The main reason i watch Rio Grande is to hear Ken sing~~My absolute favorite scene in the movie,thank god they did those kind of things.

Great thread. If I were to add to 'western heroes', amongst my favorites are; Charles Goodnight, (General) Nelson Miles, John Chisum, and Frank Canton just to name a few off the top of my head. There are many more for a host of different reasons but these guys rightfully and certainly come to mind.

My hero is Buffalo Bill Cody. We might not have any of our present appreciation of the Old West without him. He was a real hero too, not just in shows.

Ray Whitley is my son in law's great uncle.He wrote Gene Autry's theme song Back in the Saddle Again.I met Steve McQueen when he was doing Wanted Dead or Alive.He was in Birmingham for a cerebal palsy telethon.I could tell he didn't want to be there,but he warmed up when he saw I was more interested in his Mares Foot than him.  In the early 1990's I met Lash LaRue at a gun show.He had a table selling autograph pictures.He was a very small man.
