I think I have five of those by different makers and all have something to offer.  Though in many ways one of the best, I would hold off on the Bianchi set until last.  It is probably the most advanced and in depth video yet and deals with some techniques that are well beyond beginning holster maker.  Quick and dirty first time holster maker techniques are well served by Dusty Johnson and Jim Simmons videos.  The ones by Hidecrafters and Chuck are somewhere in between with some great information for the beginner and tips for the old pro.  I did not walk away from any one of these feeling like there was nothing of value picked up and this is born out in the different methods you see used in each one.  Perhaps one of these days we should get together and have a review of each video and rate it by the different viewers impressions.

Boothill Bob,

Someday I probably will make some holsters. But right now the cost of tooling probably is more than the cost of having a new holster made for me.

But I bought the Chuck Burrows DVD, and I feel I got my money back from the expenditure .... Even if I never make that holster, I now have enough knowledge of the process to be able to speak somewhat intelligently on the subject, and verbalize what I want ... which to me is worth the cost of the DVD ... to spend the kind of money to buy a good holster and then not get the desired outcome would be costly and frustrating.

Best of luck whichever way you go ...

BhB, The best money I've spent on anything leather related was Chuck Burrows holster DVD. I have John Bianchi's, and I agree with Bob's assessment. John B's was not nearly as helpful to me as Chuck's, but I did pick up a few useful tips. I've not seen Jim Simmon's video but he has an excellent book out that I refer to quite often.

Seeing your website and the leather you produce, I don't know that you need anything that I've seen in the way of instruction. It looks to me like you've got it nailed down real good.

Just my opinion. JD

BhB,

Chuck Burrows is a gentelman's gentleman. I would send him a PM telling him about exactly what you said on your post.

I would think this is not the first time he has come accross this problem, and might have a solution for you...

I wouldnt think a CD Mailer would cost much to send. Would it get thru customs alright? If so, do you really need the plastic box the dvd came in?

I started with the Al Stolhman book How to Make Holsters and then I bought the John Bianchi DVDs.  I think the Bianchi DVDs were well worth the money for me.  Certain topics like the part on wet fitting holsters really helped me.  There were a number of things I didn't agree with (like using Fiebings Edge Kote - I hate that stuff).

You guys have me curious to see Chuck Burrow's DVDs.  I am very impressed with the pictures of stuff he has posted on this forum.

Chuck makes it look so easy .... and he seems so at ease doing it that it makes you think, 'Hell, I can do that!' I think it makes a person who is intimidated with the whole thing feel comfortable enough to try ... plus he gives a lot of his 'secrets' away ...

I have had the luck to work with him on several occaisions and have always found him to be kind, sharing, and very knowledgable ... not only of the leathermaking, but of the history of the era that the leather would have found itself within ... if that makes any sense.

Plus, anyone can take a new project and make it work pretty well. One of my favorites that he did was, knowing that I could never afford one of his knives, he took a stock Indian Damascene/Wootz Bowie and, by the time he was done, made it look like it had been on some cowpoke's belt for ages ...

If you check on the 'Cutting Edge' Forum, I have posted a pic of his finished work, and what it looked like before he started...

Dalton,

Some countries protect their home industries and line their pockets by placing heavy tarriffs on goods brought into the country. When I was stationed in Spain, they had a 100%  tax on anything manufactured out of the country ... so a $45 DVD could cost, with shipping, upwards of $120....

A friend of mine had a 911 in Spain in the late '70s ... he needed to replace the whole transaxle ... and it was gonna be $1000 (1973 prices) and $1000 for tax ....

I won't put anything down on paper, but a 911 Porsche transaxle magically appeared at his house .... LOL.

Looks like I'll need one of your DVD to Chuck.

Wiley Desperado

I recently purchased Chuck Burrow's DVD and I would highly recommend it.  Personally, I know that I got more out of it because I have been making holsters for several year then I would have as a beginner.  He not only taught new methods, he also taught me how to do some things I was doing in a better way.  He also verified some methods I have been using.  His DVD is well worth the money if you like making holsters.

Hi, i live in England and have just purchased Chucks "Wild Rose Trading" DVD on making holsters and would like to thank him for putting out an excellant easy to understand product.
I have just finished my first holster, a plain Californian Slim jim using Chucks tips.

The second holster on the DVD is a Mexican Loop and i would like to re create the stamps etc as shown.
After looking at the Tandy UK website, i am a bit confused about the actual stamps Chuck uses IE: which size mulefoot and flower stamps as there is a wide choice and also the size of spots.!

Can Chuck or anyone else on the forum point me in the right direction of the Tandy stamp numbers ect used on the DVD?

I will post a pic' of my first efforts (be gentle with me guys!) when i make the mex' loop.

Congratulations on a great forum!!.

Please note i put this as a new thread before i found this one!
Thanks
Django
