Hey Delmar,
If your shooting cas at an independent or NCOWS club it's probably okay. Current SASS rules state: "The only slide action shotgun allowed is the Model 1897 Winchester shotgun, whether original or replica."

Not sure on the reason. I've used a couple co-shooters 93's and did'nt have a problem with them. Who knows why their not SASS legal?

You can find a lot of information by googling "93/97 Shotgun". There will also be some suggested search terms that will give you additional sites to read.

According to Coyote Cap, the 93/97 is permitted at the Western 3 events. Also according to CC, the first guns evaluated were modified Model 97 shotguns that had larger than original openings in the top of the ejection port; so large that shells could be loaded from the top. That resulted in their exclusion from NCOWS events. IFAIK, the new IAC 93/97 guns that have the original slot size in the receiver top have not been re-evaluated by NCOWS.

My great grandfather bought a new 1893 Winchester when they first came out. It has a 30" cylinder choke barrel. It's still in the family and still works perfectly although it's not been shot in awhile. The '93 was chambered for 2 9/16" shells so modern 2 3/4" shells are too long for the chamber although many of the newer shells have passed through that '93. It's still in the family but sadly it isn't mine.

I see no reason that the reproduction 1893 shotguns with 1897 mechanics should be excluded from NCOWS events but I'm not the one making the decision.

I just checked the NCOWS Bylaws and the 1893 repro. is on the APPROVED list.

Since there are no NCOWS events happening in my neck of the woods, I guess I'll
look for something that is SASS approved.

Smart to look for something SASS legal.  The model pictured is not "an authentic" reproduction of the 93.  Original 93's had some severe safety problems that were addressed by the 1897.  This was before the litigious society we have today and Winchester nevertheless traded 93s for new 97s.  As a consequence original 93s are fairly scarce.  I have a nice original and will shoot it slowly with BP shells, but it is not suitable for smokeless or the rapid action it would see in competition.  The 93/97 is just a 97 with a 93 ejection port.  The 93 ejection port is larger than the 97 and SASS banned it before everyone started chopping their 97's to make them easier to load.  (The actual 93 port probably isn't any faster to load, but that was the theory.)
