Well unfortunately I have to let my new to me 1898/99 Krag carbine go. :-[   My heating and air conditioning system crashed (17 yrs. old) and I need it replaced more than I need a new toy right now. Serial number indicates 1898/1899 as the year of manufacture. It has had the type 1899 carbine upgrades (no sling ring and 1901 rear sight). Asking $800 shipped.

Dang, nice haul!
Been looking for one for two years now, haven't found one yet, at least one that doesn't cost more than my WW2 Jeep did...  >:(

Most of those Model 1899's were actually issued after that - many in 1901 - look for a cartouche near the wrist of the stock.

The ones carried during the Spanish-American War were Model 1896's.

Thanks guys.  It's hard to see in the second photo but the cartouche is 1899. It also has the oiler and three piece cleaning rod in the butt.  :D

Lawdog....is yours a rifle, NRA style carbine/sporter, or a original issue carbine? A lot of rifles were cut down into sporter/carbines and sold by Bannerman's and the NRA as well a many private individuals. These usually had 1903 Springfield front sights ,a rifle style rear sling swivel, or will be filled where the swivel was, and they almost always have rifle rear sights (marked "R") and rifle top hand guards. These are even getting harder to locate.

I have one also that was cut down, tell tale sign, look for the plug at the fore end where the cleaning rod used to store.

Dusty,
Yep, I'm sure it has been up-graded some time in its past. 1898 carbine w/ 1899 up-grades....but who did it and when will probably never be known??

Lawdog,
I've been looking for one like yours for the last five years, but the few I found were way out of my price range, they were all priced like original carbines. This one was $775, but at least it's a real carbine so I bit the bullet and brought it home.  ;D

I have Drydock to thank for finding the Krag for me. I just had a heck of a time getting it. It's too long a story for the internet. The bottom line is, I did finally get it.

I usually don't go very often, unless I have money. I usually find something when I go and don't have any money to buy it.

I have a carbine and it is great. I bought it many years ago for $35!! :o

Of course I was only making about $50/week back then! :'(

Be sure and check your bolts for any cracks around the locking lug. Some problems have been found and that single lug is about all that keeps the bolt from coming back.

Pitspitr

I thought the carbine had a 2 piece rod and the rifle had a 3 piece.  ???

Mine is a really nice 1902 cartouced 1898 rifle. It was about 12, but at least they were Cabela's Bucks.
