It looks like a very early "Montana Peak" but with a very small brim.

I thought it looked like a Montana Peak to me too. The description came with
the photo..it is not my description. I have seen some Montana Peaks with a narrow
brim before but not as small as this one.

Something don't look right about that boy.

+1 !

That "thing" around his neck?  Like the good Dr. said, a scarf or perhaps an early ascot?  (More likely, the ascot was an attempt to mimic the scarf, but without the bulk.)

To be truthful I am not sure it's a guy, tintypes are reversed, the button on the coat is wrong for a reversed man's coat.  Hard to tell but I think that is not pants but a skirt.

As seen in the other tintype of a "Gambler? etc." with a revolver grip showing, his pants were voluminous and lots of extra fabric may account for the 'skirt' effect. 19th century trowser legs were sometimes cut very full.

What tells me, more than anything else, that this is a gentleman is his pose sitting with crossed legs. Something I don't recall seeing in a comparable sitting pose of a woman, although not to say it didn't happen. It's just that 19th cent.society's views on woman sitting in that pose would have been very stringent, to say the least.

And yes, I have seen images of actresses or perhaps, 'soiled doves' in skimpy clothing sitting with legs crossed. But that was intentional to titilate, and I don't think this image is intended to be risque'.

;)

So then we must guess he's wearing a ladies coat?

Or a European coat? He looks like a Greek or Italian immigrant to me. ;D
