I don't worry about scratches on my rifle. Here's what the stock looks like under that long butt cover.

But like any other rookie, I do have a couple questions.

The eyelets that some of you use, do you have a problem with them diggin into the wood? One of the rifles I am going to be making a cover has very nice wood, and I do not want to mess it up.

The covers I have made are made to cover rubber padded sleaves. Plus they hang lower than the stock bottom, so to answer your question from my point of view. No, I haven't had any problems with the eyelets scratching the stock. But I do see where there could be a problem in some cases.

Thanks GCR, first time I attempted that.  Had to remake the end piece after I started stiching as it wasn't big enough.

Nice AC! I like how the lacing looks on the comb of the stock instead of on the bottom. Different than the norm and looks great! Awesome job.

Good Lookin AC, keep it up.

AC, you are going over the top on all your stuff. Great looking cover, just great. That type of stitch line is a bear to get right and you almost nailed it on your first try. Pat yourself on the back twice for me. Great work. Looking forward to the finished product.

And I was all set to ask Amin what the heck he was talkin about :o

Very nice job on that project AC

I made one like Evil Roy offers. I did this quite a while ago, when I would not have been able to do what I could now with leather. I was more interested at the time in keeping the rifle in place on my shoulder. I had just switched from a shotgun butt Marlin to this crescent shaped and slick metal butt Yellowboy.

The revolver is from my dad, who got it from his uncle. At this point it is not in shooting condition, which you can probably tell from the picture. The serial # dates it sometime in or around the Civil War.

Here's one I did for an old Stevens single shot 20 ga. I have that I cut to an 18 1/2" barrel.  It was my first effort but I've gotten a lot of use out of it.  It's my primary woodsbumming shooter.

Those sure do look nice!

I have made so many of these that I am not even sure if I like to make them anymore..Well...maybe still like to do them a little bit ;D

I have found that when loops are added to them that the buttplate needs to be included or they will slip forward during recoil.... I have tried just about everything to hold them in place.. Seems it is the weight of the shells in the holder and not really the recoil that makes them move.. 357 mags will stay but a 45-70 will move no matter how light I load the ammo. >:(

I have used rawhide to re-enforce the lacing holes since I started making these.. I really like the look I get from rawhide but I don't think it is nessassary..
