I've scanned the photo in higher resolution and I'm able to take an even closer look.  What appeared to be an object in the hand of the man on the right appears to just be his watch chain showing behind his hand.  What I'm wondering now is whether my great-grandather (seated on the left) was wearing gloves.  His right hand especially seems to be ribbed like some kind of cloth gloves.  Delmonico, what do you think?

CC Griff

When I first blew this photo up on my computer I too wondered if the guy on the left was wearing gloves.

Thanks for the replies, gents!  This has been very interesting; even my mother has been reading this board because of these comments.  We also found it interesting that our family photo was being commented on in England.

Of course if there are more comments to be had, we'd love to read them too.  I just wanted to make sure that I was thanking those who had taken an interest.

CCG, just be glad they aren't smiling in the photo. A few of these guys in this forum are so knowledgeable (and detail oriented) that they'd be darn near able to identify the makers of the dentures or false teeth shown in the smiles.

Sometimes it's kinda scary!

CCG sent me a much higher resaloution picture.  Spent some time last night with it:

Started on the fella in the middle:

Lots of interesting things in there.  I'm going to not comment on things for a bit, look them over.

The middle gent seems to have what looks like, to me, a cigar cutter hanging on the end of that upper chain.

With no one commenting in a while, I'll say that the gent on the right is wearing congress shoes/boots.  Am I right?

That's what I thought, got your E-Mail but have not had time to work with the even better scan.  Perhaps this weekend.

Did you also notice the scalloptop boots have two piece tops, yet a one piece vamp?

Yes, I did notice the two-piece tops, but I'm not much of an expert on 19th century clothing.

What do you think of my great-grandfather's hands.  Is he wearing gloves or is his skin naturally ribbed?

I am not sure on the gloves yet, look it over, almost looks like one on the one hand, but you can see the finger nails on the other one.  Got the new version down-loaded today, might get some done later this evening on it.  Looked it over, we are going to run into some of the photos grainyness but we'll see.  You don't have the negative do you? ;D

SIL says his Mom has a picture of his Great-Great-Grandfather and family reciving their homestead papers.  He's gonna scan it next time he's their.  He said Grandma will know the date, sounds interesting.

I agree with you that it looks like his left hand is bare, but I'm trying to figure out what would make the ribbed appearance of his right hand.  We don't have the negative, unfortunately...

Wonder if he had a physical defect that caused him to wear a knit glove of a light color for the photo?

Those glass plate negatives are great though because of their size.  I've seen pictures of around 200 Meg scanned from them, talk about being able to see detail.  Would really shock the old photographers with what we can find in their pictures thanks to digital.

I scanned one at about 70 MB, but the two computers I tried it with couldn't handle the size (or the photo programs couldn't, I'm not sure which).  I can't email beyond 10 MB anyway.  I may have gotten some dust on my scanner or the photo with the ones I sent you too.  It wasn't really apparent until they were enlarged.

I tried to work with it last night, computor had a problem.  My wife got home and fixed it, but then she had to have it.  Might get to it tommorow night.

OK, my HP program won't handle that big either, the MS one at work will will so I cropped it into pieces and sent it to me.  Asked the digital photo geeks on my Lab forum and there are a couple programs they said I could down load and try.  Nome have worked with a picture that big.

Anyway the dust was there, but not a big problem we're as far as we can go because of the grainyness of the print that big.

Worked on the "Congress shoes" this afternoon, the one didn't show much new:

However the other one was intreresting:

I don't understand the seam, but might be a different way of making them than I've seen before, but I think his elastic in the sides has gave up.

 8) NICE PHOTO, COAL CREEK, MY FAMILY HAS LONG  HISTORY  IN THAT AREA ALSO, BUT IN THE DOLORES, COLORADO AREA. THE HOUSE HAS BEEN THERE SINCE THE 1880's.  MY GRANDMA USED TO TELL ME SHE REMEMBERED RIDING THEIR HORSES OVER TO CHECK ON THE STOCK WHERE THE McPHEE LAKE IS NOW. HAVE TO ASK MY MOM IF THERE ARE ANY PHOTOS LEFT FROM BACK THEN :)
