Ladder Sight on a Lever Action?

Hi,

I was watching 'The Streets of Laredo' the other day, and Captain Woodrow Call pulls out what looks like a Winchester (Marlin?) lever action and it has a ladder sight a la Spencer and Rolling Block rifle style. What is more interesting was that the rear sight was not mounted on the tang, but where the normal 'buckhorn' rear sight would be mounted.

Was this just another 'Hollywood-ism' or were there actually lever actions around like this one?

I put this thread on the 'Gusmithing' and "Movies' sections as well ...

I also watched 'The Streets of Laredo and he is indeed using a Henry as shown by  Silver Creek Slim. This type of sight was also used on the early 1866 Winchester (improved Henry) rifle;)

In Lonesome Dove Gus uses the same sight on his Henry when he makes the long shot and gut shoots the comanchero.

In the book The Streets of Laredo, Woodrow has trouble with artritic finger joints swelling up: So he takes the trigger-guard off of his Winchester. :o ::)

I'm pretty sure that turns it into a club.  I pretty much lost respect for McMurtry at that time.

The later editions of The Winchester Book by Madis has two or more pages dedicated to sights with very good illustrations.

I've got an 1894 Marlin take down chambered for 25-20 made in 1895 set up exactly that way.
