your a daisy if you do

My two ASM and one Pietta 44 navies all take the Remington #10. The ASMs are from the mid 1990s and the Pietta from 2000-2003 so who knows if they still have the same size nipples. Mine are stock.

I am new to Cap and Ball and always thought that the No10s were normal and the No11s were magnum caps (least ways thats how my CCI caps are marked). I saw someone say recently that the ROAs prefer No11 caps. I only had No10s and it seemed that the first hammer fall seated the cap and the second one set em off :( As you have probably gathered, I haven't used them much.

My Uberti Brass framed Texan44 works well with No10s, but you have to push them on soooooooooo hard, I'm almost wetting my pants worrying about them going off.

Are the different brands different sizes, etc? Mind you I have only seen CCI caps out here (I haven't been taking much notice until recently I'll have to say).

Not trying to hi-jack your thread, but it is a subject that I have been meaning to ask about.
All my cowboy gun's calibres start with a 4! It's gotta be big bore and whomp some!

The solution is always TRESO nipples and #10 Remington Caps.  Other items will work but the Treso/#10s Remington will always work satisfactorily.

Sir Charles deMouton-Black

I have Tresos for my Piettas. but like the land downunder, we here in the true north strong and free don't have the benefit of choice very often.

After being told for a couple of years that Remington #10s were on backorder I picked up the CCI #10s that were available in limited quantities.  They would not fit easily on the Tresos.  I reverted to factory issue cones, and the CCIs work about right.

I have some RWS caps, but they are tighter still. The answer seems to be that there are variations, and you must try them out until you find a combo that works.  #11 caps are larger still and generally are used on caplock long guns, and ROAs.

There are few times that I envy Americans, but availability of firearms and shooting supplies cover most of them.

The majority of Canadians favoured Obama, but on his election regulations slammed shut the door on importing a lot of stuff.  Anything "that touches a gun" requires American export licences. Canadian authorities only worry about firearms by&large but online commerce is about dead.  We are forced to be interested in American politics as a self defence measure.

#10 caps are smaller than #11 caps.  #11 caps are generally for rifles, and the Walker/Dragoon nipples.

The CCI "Magnum" caps, whether #10 or #11 size, are hotter caps, and were suggested for use with Pyrodex, which is harder to light than real BP.

Are there Magnum caps available in both 10s and 11s?

Is there any advantage / disadvantage in using Magnum caps? I have both as the local gunshop didn't have much on the shelf when I went there and I bough a couple tins of both (CCIs- which was all of his stock at that time :) ).

Hey Doc, Last time I was in Gander Mountain, they had a lot of Rem #10s.
I forget the "damage", but seemed a little pricey.
Scheels in Iowa City had them last time I passed through there, too.

Doc,

Yup, I'll be there..haven't missed the March doin's yet, despite being near-death back in 07'...the guys were planning how to distribute my cowboy guns and gear that day.   I (nearly) always have my own BP match down on the botoms, too...Tradition for me.

Might want to check with Rooster about mail-ordering some Remington caps...He was interested in combining orders with me a month or so ago, but I couldn't find a dealer with BOTH the caps I need, plus the Remington caps (which ain't my favorites).

Slim

MO Half Breed,
The Remington #11 is larger than the CCI#11.
The smallest cap I've had is the RWS#1055 (sometimes called a #10)
The next larger but still small  is the CCI#10
Next larger is RWS#1075
Then comes the Remington#10
Larger by a smidge is the CCI#11
Largest is the Rem#11.

Half of my 15+ guns take the RWS 1075s and the other half take the CCI#11s but ALL will take the Rem#10. If they don't accept a Rem#10 I swap out the nipples with ones that will (stainless).

These sizings are based on my fittings of a variety of models of mostly stock Pietta nipples, Butler Creek/Uncle Mikes stainless nipples, Uberti, ASM, and one set of Tresos that I have removed. The taper of the nipple makes a big difference as to what cap will fit. A longer cap of the same diameter will fit as if it is smaller because it will meet resistance on the cone before a shorter cap of the same diameter. The stock Pietta and Uberti nipples take the Rem#10 as do the ASMs.

#10 Remingtons work great on Treso's; but will also work just fine on factory nipples.

Magnum caps are not required for C&Bs, and probably don't provide any advantage over standard caps.

I have my local toy store proprietor order my Remingtons.  He orders a case of 5000 for me every couple years.  When he includes it in one of his powder orders, I don't have to pay the whole hazmat fee.
