Is the 58 remmie prone to cap jams?

If so, more or less than "Colts". Besides Treso nipples what to do?
Thanks

I have not experienced cap jams on my two 58s. The nose of the hammer on a Remington is very narrow compared to the Colt hammer. The wider opening in the frame of a Colt for the wider hammer allows loose caps to fall into the action. The corresponding opening in a Remington tends to minimize this happening. Properly fitting caps and nipples are highly recommended.

YMMV

They're ore likely to jam the hammer than fall in the action...but I've been doing C&B since I was a lad, so I've had both happen.

I've never had a "cap jam" on any of my '58 Remingtons.  I have occassionally have had a "miss fire".   As near as I can tell these are from a cap coming a little loose from recoil and then not going off when hit as it has come loose or crooked on the nipple.

Among the cap & ball pistols Remingtons have a lot less problems than Colts.

Good shootin', . . .  :)

Well, that isn't my experience. IMO, Colts can be as relaible.
I use 1860 Army Colts almost exclusively and have very, very few problems. I have no special modifications, other than knowing how to set them up proper (springs & things), fit the correct cap (shape & size of the cone) and operate them to their best ability (and to recover from failures). I have over 50 clean matches behind me, most shooting the Colt C&B revolver....and I don't have to disassemble to clean & load. I am a Remington fan as well, but they aren't my go-to weapon of choice.

Montana Slim . . . nice to hear another view.   I'm only able to go by what I've heard from both Remington and Colt shooters.  I've never shot Colt cap & ball pistols myself.   Maybe it is a matter of knowing your guns and working 'em right.  :)   Proper nipples, caps, etc.

I have Uberti, Pietta & ASM, they're all good...My Pietta experiences tell me I'm gonna have to sort out and modify the cones to be sure I have ones that fit caps proper. Uberties are generally more consistent (particularly the cones) and easier overall to setup right. I don't weaken mainsprings...sometimes I stiffen them up a bit (which is harder than lightening them). I don't follow the common "wisdom" of raising the muzzle to the sky when cocking....this might allow a fired cap to fall into the works. Use a least a minimum charge of powder to seat the ball firmly...otherwise you'll get a hangfire. I use over-ball lubricant & a good coat of borebutter on the cylinder pin.

What do you use for caps slim?

On the guns I have:

Pietta (Remington & Colts) - CCI #11
Uberti (Colts) - CCI #10

That is when using with the factory cones. keep in mind that Pietta cones vary slightly....I usually have to tweak them a bit.
