I have been looking at an Old Armory SAA by USFA, and it looks pretty nice.  Although at first it looks like a regular Pre-War SAA by USFA, if you look carefully and compare, the differences do stand out.  The cylinder and frame window are a tad smaller, or actually more in spec to the original 1st Gen. Revolvers, the beveling on the cylinder is very nicely done, and the tight "V" notch rear sight and small thinned out front sight are pretty obvious.  This revolver has the one piece walnut grips and Blackpowder frame with the bullseye ejector head.

I will hopefully get pictures this weekend.

Capt. John Fitzgerald

Doc,
I know that USFA's "suggested retail" price on the Old Armory model is just a couple of bucks shy of two grand.  If you don't mind my asking, what price has your dealer put on it?

Mine came with the optional 1 pc. Walnut grips ($295 option) and was still just shy of two.  Unfortunately just shy went out the window with the dish water after the state had its way.

I will try to post some pics this weekend.

Here are the pics.  Someday I will figure out how to take better photos.

Howdy Doc, your gun is a beauty, if you want to improve your picture taking, go to http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/forumdisplay.php?f=66 at the top of the page you will see a thread that the Moderator Turminator posted on taking pictures, it's excellent, I'm using his method and I'm having a great improvement over the way I was doing things, first thing he has you do is lose the flash, then you need to build a light box, check it out, I think you will learn a lot, let me know how you do.

Can't seem to find it. I'm not familiar with this website.
A work in progress.

lovely firearm!

while your photos are nice, TWF is right about the lightbox. here's a link to a thread at BladeForums that describes a very nice and very inexpensive set up: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=328550

having been a professional product photographer at one time and having built a number of these, i'd say his design is about perfect for "shooting" handguns. and it can easily be made even cheaper than his low price, if one uses existing items found around the home.

give 'er a try and see.

Doc Sunrise

Well Thank You Wileycoyote,

That is nice and easy.  Have the day off today so I will try to build one of these.

Howdy Doc

What's nice about this type set up is you can make them in several different sizes, I built mine with PVC, and made two sets of poles, so that I can shoot small items like knives or large ones like rifles and gun leather/ six guns, by using your lights you can defuse all the glare and create beautiful professional shots, and when your done, if your light box is in the way, just take the PVC joints apart and store them for the next shoot. I use old white bed sheets as my light defuser.

hey doc, when you are happy with some photos you've taken, post a couple here for us all.

good luck and have fun with it!

I notice that yours has "45 COLT" rollmarked on the barrel, the one on the website does not.  Any idea why?

Jared

Doc Sunrise

Mine is made with a late 1st Gen Serial in the 200xxx range and replicates markings of that period.  The one on the website picture is supposedly of an early commercial model as it has 45cal marking on the trigger bow, where mine does not.  I believe the very first 1st Gens that were made for the Cavalry did not have the 45cal or 45 Colt markings as it was understood that Cavalry Colts were only in 45Colt, but when Colt started to make SAA's for commercial sales, the 45cal marking on the trigger bow was placed to show it was not a military SAA.

jphendren

Can you order the Old Armory SAA with the Ainsworth rollmarks?

Jared

Capt Nick

Hey Doc,

Your comments and photos are very interesting. I have a 1st Gen (SN 227508); it is also marked 45 Colt on the barrel and not on the trigger bow but unlike yours, mine has a 2 line patent stamp and does not have the bullseye ejector cap.

And mine is cross pin, not BP.
