STANARDSVILLE, Va. – A judge in Virginia says it's a draw between two Union and Confederate Civil War re-enactors who got into a tussle on the battlefield.

A judge found each man not guilty of assault on Wednesday after they pressed charges against each other over the dispute last September.

The men were playing cavalry officers in a re-enactment of the Battle of Stanardsville. The Confederate re-enactor claims his Union counterpart knocked his hat off.

The Confederate was accused of responding by firing a blank round from his revolver. There was no bullet, but the powder charge injured the Union re-enactor.

Both men were on horseback and both said their actions were accidental. The judge concluded he could not find either man guilty "beyond a reasonable doubt."

Seen worse than that.
Saw two guys at the Gettysburg event in 1998 wrestling over a bowie knife in a dtich on the thrid day scenario, I guess the CSA guy wanted to say he'd gotten much further through the stone wall than they really got back then. Surprised that nobody made a big deal of it and I've never found anyreference to it afterwards, but I was there and watched it happen.

Saw a gun gun crew get "overuun" by Yankees and the Yank infantry weren't very kind of them while doing so. Same said yankees fixed bayonets and ran right toward our gun, yelling as they did. We all grabbed handspikes and when they saw the # 1 on the crew grab the worm and hold it at them with the butt end against the ground at a 30 degree angle, they stopped dead in their tracks. We weren't about to let them run right through that space with fixed bayonets and it would have gotten really ugly if they'd done that. To this day, I am convinced they would have ran right through us with those bayonets fixed. We had... words with the Yankee SGT afterwards, let's just say that.  :-X

Remember that episode of MASH when Igor had the little brass naval gun and fired the ceremonial slaute for Frank Burns, and the ball struck the blugle out of Radars's hand? Saw something almost that bad. Watch a newpaper wad from a Parrot Rifle embed itself almost a foot into the ground, lessthan 20 feet away from the opposing rank (actually, another gun crew). The CO of that gun had to be held back from going over in the middle of the specator even and beating the heck out of the other gun's owner!

 >:(  Damfools! If they're so all-fired anxious to get into it over a 145-year-old arguement, why don't they volunteer for the real military...or them guys that work out of Virginia!  Of course, the military probably wouldn't have 'em...can't follow orders! We got enough problems with disgruntled workers shootin' people at their former places of employment, Al Q trying to blow up airplanes, etc.  Wish I could get back in.  Too old and take too many pills. Need a resupply helo just to keep me in meds!
Ride to the sound of the guns, but watch out for bushwhackers! Godspeed to all in harm's way in the defense of Freedom! God Bless America!

My kids have ancestors that fought on both sides, and are taught to respect both Union and Confederate because they were American fighting men caught up in a tragic episode of American history.

Charles, you get applause for raising kids the RIGHT way!  Thanks for that!

As a side note, when Ottawa Creek Bill, Jed Cooper and I had the great pleasure to attend the 1st SW Texas NCOWS regional shoot a few months back, I was VERY leery of wearing my Indian Wars Cavalry era uniform, because could easily be mistaken for a Union  outfit.  I wasn't sure how "welcome" that uniform would be.  With only one exception it was a non-issue.  The one exception was said - quote/unquote - in jest (3 or 4 times  ;) ) ... but I could tell it was motivated by deep feelings.  It was from an onlooker, NOT a fellow competitor.  By the way, I did take the opportunity to buy a CSA Columbus issue (IF I have the info right; the memory isn't always precise ) jacket and a few accoutrements (said/spelled with the proper French accent) to go with it.  That was fun.

SHB, Don't worry about folks like that.  The rednecks like to think of themselves as "rebels".  I had relatives on both sides, and like you said, It's over.  I'll wear my uniform the next time you guys come, I wanna hear somebody try and "badmouth" me.

Mine were on both sides as well - my GG Grandfather rode for the 2d Iowa Volunteer Cavalry as a Corporal, with his brothers in different Iowa Regiments - and my GG Uncle who rode for deBray's 5th Texas as a Captain.

With the Indian Wars campaigns seeing veterans from both sides on active service - and a reunited country - the only 'animosity' would've been toward 'carpetbaggers' for the first few years.

After that, folks were trying to rebuild their lives and get on with them.

The only thing I ever found interesting about Civil War reenactment was the battle formations in use - after all, tomes have been written about the battles themselves, so there's no 'surprise' awaiting anyone.

That, and the cannons - I 'do' like cannon fire...

Most of the reenactors I ran across never wore any sort of uniform.

Vaya,

Scouts Out!

SHB, I sincerely apologize for that persons remarks. It was a great honor for me that you guys from Indiana made that long drive down here from Indiana. I sincerely hope that the remarks made by that one individual does not deter you guys from coming back.

Jimmy, you needn't apologize for her remarks.  You and I know where we stand.  She had the good taste to disguise it as "humour," and I can live with that.

As I've mentioned numerous times, I/we had a wonderful time and I value ALL the folks I was privileged to meet.  And y'all down there SURE know how to eat well!  I still have pleasant remembrances of the beef brisket (and sauce) we had at the banquet ... which I'm sorry to say you had to miss!

Careful there, SHB, or next thing ya know they'll have ya eatin' collards and askin' fer seconds...   ;)

All of my forebears stood with the Confederacy.  But as an earlier poster said, its been over for quite a while now, and folks should probably get on with things.  I will tease "Yankees" from time to time, making sure that everyone knows and agrees that its all in fun.  And I expect the same sort of thing from them.

P-s-s-s-s-t!  Did you know there's three kinds of Yankees?  Yep, that's right!

1.  A Yankee is somebody from north of the Mason-Dixon line who comes to Dixie for a visit, then has the decency to go home.

2. A Danged Yankee is somebody from north of the Mason-Dixon line who comes to Dixie for a visit, then decides to stay.

3.  A Gol-Danged Yankee is somebody from north of the Mason-Dixon line who comes to Dixie for a visit, decides to stay, and then tries ta run things.

Ridiculous!  What in the HELL is the matter with these people?  The veterans on BOTH sides shook hands at the last muster and before AND they actually WERE at war and REALLY shot at one another!!!   Stupid Jackasses!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank You Jeff.

Hunter brings up a good point about the Vets that fought the war gathering together and making amends. There are also many accounts of Union and Confederate troops gathering after battles to pick up their dead, do some trading and talking to one another, mainly pre 1864.

River City John

There was at least one documented incident of a Masonic meeting with attendants from both sides during a lull in the fighting. If I remember it was in the Western Theatre around the time of Franklin or Nashville, and I want to say Confederate General Patrick Cleburne was one who participated.

Let me do some looking later on this morning.

Well, to the best of my knowledge none of my ancestors fought for the confederacy. As a matter of fact my Great-Great- Grandfather was severely wounded by a Confederate ball at Prairie Grove Arkansas., but that has never stopped me from honoring both sides.
When I'm engaged in IWP living history I've often wondered what those of Lakota descent thought of my presentations. I've had the oppertunity to speak with a descendant of American Horse, a Lakota Chief who was killed at Slim Buttes. In this case it seemed that I knew more about his Great Grandfather than he did. Anyway I was honored to have had the oppertunity to speak with the descendant of a very brave man. A man that was very likely killed by the company (company C 9th infantry) that I portray.

As with any historical subject, I figure it's over, get over it, but learn from it.
