G'day all,

Just wondering if many ROA shooters use the adjustable sights type and in what styles/classes are the allowed in?

Mr. Mucus, sir,

The 7.5", Adj. sight models are what I had for years before I started CAS, and have had no mechanical problems whatsoever.

BUT, when I started CAS, I found that I was catching various parts of my hands on the rear sight blade.

This I found to be somewhat painfull and tended to leak blood all over the place, this of course was when I was trying to remove said ROA's faster than usual from the holsters.

I then modified them by removing both fore and rear sights. The foresight was replaced by a half-round blade and the rear sight by a notched block let into the space left by the adj. sight.

I have been informed that the rear sight would not be legal under SASS rules, the top strap would have to be welded up and then re-profiled.

Luckily I shoot in Britain where we are not so particular but I have seen some of my contemporaries still using the adjustable models. ( Percussion of course, we are not trusted to own and use cartridge revolvers.)

Obviously the more learned of the readers of this forum will be able to advise you according to the present rules in force where you shoot.

Good luck, AE.

Howdy MM, and Happy New Year Down Under.

I've shot a brace of old ROAs with brass backstraps and squareback trigger guards for years now.  Never have had any questions asked about them.  They have the original adjustable sights.  If I ever do get challenged, I'll just pull out my brace of 1860 open tops and have at it with them.

Seems like around this area there aren't too many rule Nazis.

I know the 'modern' adjustable sight rules have been dropped, but I don't know how they apply to percussion revolvers.

The advantage is a moot point I feel, as once zeroed in are very unlikely to be ever adjusted for cowboy. Just easier to zreo in first up, screwdriver job, not a gunsmith job (mind you most gunsmiths aren't all that happy about doing this job either.

How will you guys in the UK get on now that the ROA is kaput?

One of the Italian factories will come out with a similar gun I suppose.

Boy, I have nearly bought a pair of ROAs about ten times or more.
All my cowboy gun's calibres start with a 4! It's gotta be big bore and whomp some!

FFD, the ROA over here cost twice as much as the Italian percussion revolvers, so how many went to that expense I couldn't say.

Personally I was looking for a pair of the new, fixed sight, short barreled ROA's when we heard about Rugers decision.

I should imagine that they will become as rare as hens teeth now!

Just as a matter of interest, the Muzzle Loaders Association of GB, one of the governing bodies over here, will not allow the ROA in any of their comps, unless you enter it in 'Free Pistol' against the precision, custom built, mousefart shooters!

Now, is that a reputation, or what!!!

Thanks pards..... rules are relaxed hereabouts, with no sheepstations on the line, nothing but fun shooting for me.

Just wondering about what's official. 8)

MM

By the way, I'm almost ready to have a rig made up by one of the leather handymen here, and in the process of buying  a new 7.5" NV .45Colt for backup , so it looks like I'll finally be taking up this fun thing you all do in a months time.

Officially, the ROA with adjustable sights are not legal in any of the black powder categories.

Dick Dastardly

I think yer rite Noz.

But around these parts no one is too "official".  Also, that's one reason I have the brace of 1860 open tops.  They're fun to shoot but won't handle the warthog 45 Colt loads.  I shoot C45Spl in them with EPP-UG boolits.  They are my backups just in case someone gets too "official" about my ROAs. . .

I was always told that they had to be entered in the MODERN class.

No such thing as "Modern" anymore. They can be shot in any category except the black powder categories.

How did that Johhny Cash song (The Devil's Right Hand) go?

Nice and Warm by the Fire,

Adjustable sights are legal in all SASS catagories period.  Rule change in 08...........I have a pair of ROA's and just took the rear sight off and use the open space as a rear sight.  Fast , accurate enough for CASS.  Have fun , make smoke.

Sir Charles deMouton-Black

I guess not being a SASS member has its disadvantages.  I spent all that money over the years replacing my Blackhawks, and now its all a waste!  Its too bad I had so much fun along the way 'though.

Actually, being in a 'Modern' class might work to your favor ... you might become a class of one; and be first in your class whatever your score is ... *S*

There are a few more than that NOZ.

For SASS matches, adjustable sights are allowed in all age based categories (Buckaroo, Young Gun, Cowboy, Wrangler, 49er, Senior, Silver Senior, Elder Statesman) and B-Western.

Adjustable sights are not allowed in Frontier Cartridge, Frontier Cartridge Duelist, Frontiersman, Duelist, Gunfighter, and Classic Cowboy.
