For those who wander in the area of State College, PA  (more or less smack in the middle of the state), there is the Pennsylvania Military Museum, which has acquired two of the 14" gun barrels from BB 38 that were found at Dahlgren.

This link shows their efforts in acquiring and displaying them:

Thanks for the link, Gentlemen. A real piece of Naval History that needed to be preserved for people to visit.

... And I thought the gun on my M1A1 tank (120 mm, or approx. 5 in.) was pretty big ......

Kinda puny compared to these behemoths!

Those are for those long range shots.

Believe it ... or don't ... (but I can prove it) my little puny 120 mm will actually launch a projectile about 2 1/2 times farther than one of these guns, but not with the same accuracy at full distance.  The only thing the 120 is guaranteed to hit (at over 76 miles, the actual "maximum ordinate" distance of a 120 mm sabot round) is the ground!

:o

;) ;)

;D ;D ;D

Now you know the REST of the story!

Daniel Nighteyes

BB-38, the USS Pennsylvania, was the sister ship to the USS Arizona.  They carried twelve of these 14-inch guns in four triple turrets, as did all of the United States Pacific Fleet battlewagons in 1941.

The Pennsylvania was in drydock at Pearl Harbor on December 7th, along with the destroyers Cassin and Downes.  The two destroyers were severely damaged, and the Pennsylvania was damaged.

I noticed they built the mounts to hold three tubes.  Are they hoping to find another to complete the triple mount?
