Well I did it, took the dust cover off and forgot about the ball keeper.  It bounced off my head, the shop ceiling and over somewhere in the area where I cast bullets at.  You know the kind of area, where there are trillions of little BB sized pieces of lead.  I tried running a magnet over the area, but haven't found it.  I tried VTI, and have a couple on order but there backordered on that part, leads me to believe I'm not the first to do that.   So far I've been shooting it without the cover, but would like to get it back together.

Thanks

If you know the size, any bearing house sells loose ball bearings.

Buy three.

If you only get one, you'll lose another one...or more.

If you buy three at once you'll die of old age with them still in your tool box, unused.

I lost the same thing on a 73, spring and all. Boy do they fly fast. I fixed mine by using a BB and a spring from a ball point pen. I will never run short of BB's because they are sold everywhere and BB's are hard like a ball bearing. Have had this fix for a few years now and never had a problem.

ACE hardware stores has individual ball bearings in the little plastic trays in the nut and bolt department.  They are so cheap you might as well buy a few spares.

A bit late for this, but, I lost the Ball that keeps the dust cover from moving on ots own and found that the ball bearing from an AR15A2 rear sight works just fine and can be had from Brownells.  I got mine from the Armorer at the Army unit here.

I'd say what unit, but do not want to get the poor guy in trouble.
Listen!  Do you hear that?  The roar of Cannons and the screams of the dying.  Ahh!  Music to my ears.
