Need help on a tool

Brass buttplate on an older 50 cal hawkin style,is a bit wide,no fit to wood smoothness.What tool would i use to get metal to wood?
Brass file?I figure tapin the wood near the plate and file it down to the wood? Am i close?

I tape the stock and use a fine cut mill file.  Just take your time, and watch the angle of the file.
