'Kay, now you have got me hungry, too!

I got to go to the Bergwacht School while I was stationed in Europe ... and to me there is nothing better than a pickelled herring and onion on Brotschen ... we opened and closed the bier tent in Sonthofen ... and one bier was a liter! After all that bier, the salty/briny taste of the herring was like the ultimate thing to complement the bier.

Of course, the next day, after living in our clothes for a week and then sweating out all that bier and herring, we had an entire railcar to ourselves ... no one dared come near!

My moniker is my great grandfather's name. He served with the 2nd Florida Mounted Regiment in the Civil War. Afterward, he came home, packed his wife into a wagon, and was one of the first NorteAmericanos on the Frio River southwest of San Antonio ..... Kinda where present day Dilley is ...

Gruss Gott!  (A traditional Bavarian greeting, akin to saying "Howdy!")

I want to eat at that restaurant, Pancho!

If any of y'all fancy fine Germerman cooking and are visiting Disney World, there's a GREAT German restaurant there in the park.

I had the pleasure of being stationed in Fulda, FRG (Federal Republic of Germany, otherwise known as the former West Germany) for nearly 8 years with the 11th Armored Cavalry.  (Border Duty)  I sure miss the Schnell Imbiss (fast snack bar) where one could get Currywurst (bratwurst and fries, covered with Curry Catchup & curry powder; Rindswurst - a beef sausage, cut & eaten on a Brotschen (small bread roll) with hot mustard and/or sauerkraut and fries; Jaeger Schnitzel - a fine breaded pork steak covered with a flavorful gravy containing mushrooms & onions; and ...

Oh, hell heck, now I'm really hongry!  Fortunately, my Frau, Billie, is a wizard at the stove and makes killer Jaeger Schnitzel and of course, good Bratwurst is readily available.

Yummy!

That does sound good! I was stationed near Stuttgart for 3 1/2 years. Being in the Scwabisch(SP?) area in the southwest, the preffered side to the Jeagerschnitzle was Spatzle(sp? again), A kind of home made noodles with gravy. Throw in a nice cold Schwabenbrau or Dinkle Acker beer. MMMMM.....I'm getting hungry too now! Then there was the wurst I used to get when going on the Volksmarches. I don't remember what kind exactly, but it was served with a hard bread roll and a spicy brown mustard. It was worth the 10K walk just to get those!

OK, now you've all gotten me in the mood for some German food when I visit Texas in March.

Can anyone recommend a good German restaurant in the downtown San Antonio area or Fredericksburg?

I found a nice little gasthaus in Stuttgart this fall.  The owner didn't speak English and I hadn't spoken German in any great amount since the late 70s, but by the end of the week we were carrying on a pretty good conversation.  Hopefully I'll get over that way again before I retire this time next year.

I spent three years in Germany and the food and beer was and is one of the main memories.
I attended a reunion of my old unit and we all agreed that if we could find a Schnellimbliss (fast food vendor)we'd clean it out of Bratwurst and Currywurst and brotchen we'd clean it out.
There is a Gernam food  place in Dallas that imports German food and ships it over night but the shipping is kinda high.
i just plan on filling up  next time I'm there.

I'd love to get back there for a visit someday, but I doubt it will ever fit my budget. I was doing some searching online a while back, and found they closed my old base (Nellingen barracks)back in the 90's, about the same time they de-activated VII corps. From what I saw, nothing left but the HQ buildings, that date back to WWII, and the housing area was re-modled for apartments. But most of the others nearby seem to still be open.

Something from the "more-than-you-ever-wanted-to-know" department.

Just down the hill from me, on what passes for the main street, is a restaurant called Two Guys From Italy.  Well, one of those two Italian guys married a German woman who surely knows how to cook!  Some of the best German food I've ever had (and that's saying something) came out of that Italian restaurant.  They carry some fine German biers - ah - beers too.

They've got a Deli in Downtown SA that has been there for years, the name of it escapes me. There are several good German places in Fredricksburg. I have eaten at most of the over the years and found them to be good.

Dallas:

Hoffstetters (On Lover's Lane in Highland Park):  Was the best.  It closed down about 3 years ago.  I heard they were relocating, but haven't seen a new location yet.

Kuby's Sausage House.  Mostly meat and sausage.

Barvarian Grill   In Plano.  Very good variety of German & Barvarian dishes.

Frtzl's  In Garland.  The BEST Barvarian food in DFW.  This is a very small restaurant.  It only has about 10 tables in the place.  The owner/cook is from Austria and greets everyone.  They only serve German beer and most of it from the tap.  If you are in DFW, this is a 'must see' for German food lovers.  The menu if all traditional Barvarian dishes.  He does one local favorite:  "Kick A*% Schnitzel"  (Weinershnitzel bathed in a spicey gravey sauce with cayenne pepper.)

You know, I believe I ate there once while on a business trip.  If true, I most heartily agree!
