Replacement nipples

Could anyone give a breif description of how one would go about determining the size of a nipple so a replacement could be ordered? I have a very old Remington revolver (150 years give or take) with very battered nipples, and all charts I have seen to date either show which replacement will work in which reproduction, or they give some sort of numeric code for size. That is the part I am trying to determine. Thank you in advance.

Thanks for the attempt. Yeah, that is the problem I ran into. I only signed up here after a LOT of outside research which got me nowhere fast. Still, I won't give up hope yet. Dixie wants me to mail one in, which I most likely will do. Worse comes to worse I may be able to get someone to machine some for me, they are not all that complex.

Remington Navy and Army models take the same cones (nipples) as Colt Army and Navy models. There are two lengths, long and short. The Old Model Navy I worked on used the long version.

These things are unbelievably hard! To get the old ones out, I had to cut them down the middle with a carbide milling cutter. It required a rather complicated setup in a Bridgeport milling machine. By the sixth cone, both ends of the double ended cutter were toasted. If you have a very steady hand, you could probably do it with a Dremel using diamond cutters. (I did a Springfield M-1861 musket that way.) I hope yours come out easier.

If you can get one out intact, it's fairly easy to measure the thread with a thread gage & caliper. The measuring tools are pretty inexpensive at Harbor Freight. Dixie Gun works is a good source for replacement cones.

Thanks for all the help. I have gone ahead and sent one to Dixie to see if they can match one. I have talked to VTI and he finds it unlikely their metric clone replacements for the pocket 31 would work. Worse came to worse, I have an aircraft certified welder who can "rebuild" the nipple for me, but at $65 an hour times a coupe of hours, it would be less expensive to replace, methinks.
