No Western is complete without some good music to help move things along.

Although there are a few that didn't need much music at all, and they got along just fine.

How many favorites can you name?
A work in progress.

Two come righ to mind .....

The Wonderful Country ( one of my favorites) with its odd score of (I believe) indigent instruments ...

The Commancheros for its over-the-top testosteronic (is that a word) score ...
My moniker is my great grandfather's name. He served with the 2nd Florida Mounted Regiment in the Civil War. Afterward, he came home, packed his wife into a wagon, and was one of the first NorteAmericanos on the Frio River southwest of San Antonio ..... Kinda where present day Dilley is ...

"Courage is being scared to death and saddling up anyway." John Wayne

I going to primarily stick to Western movie theme songs, because the full score doesnt always match the quality of the theme.

The Magnificent Seven

Red River (its also the melody to "My Rifle, My Pony and Me" from Rio Bravo

The Searchers

Shane

And, believe it or not, Blazing Saddles.  Its a great B Western theme (thank you, John Morris) and one of Frankie Laine's best efforts

I could probably think of some more, but these'll do for now.

Will Ketchum

The ones that come to mind are High Noon and the various instrumentals on Clint Eastwood's Spaghetti Westerns.

I like Frankie Laine's rendition of the High Noon theme much more than Tex Ritter's.  Unfortunately, the Tex Ritter version is the one used in the movie.

Major 2

I'm with Dan

The Magnificent Seven

Red River (its also the melody to "My Rifle, My Pony and Me" from Rio Bravo

The Searchers

But I'll add

Lomesome Dove ( Duvall & Tommy Lee Jones )

Alamo The Price of Freedom ( I'm very partial to this  Merrell Jenson's Score)
when planets align...do the deal !

Daniel, I agree but since the theme of the thread is for the movies I list it because I like it.  I like the lyrics better on the Lane version.  There is an interesting story on the Internet that I read regarding the changes made in the lyrics for the movie.  It was a sign of the times.  I tried to find this reference but couldn't in a quick search.

The story I heard, from O.J. Sikes, is that Ritter recorded the song for the movie, but that there were no plans for public sale of the recording until they heard that Frankie Laine was going to record and release it.  Then they rushed back into the studio and re-recorded it, making some changes to the lyrics in the process.

Hands down best overall. It even sold a lot of cigarettes over the years.
People like me are the reason people like you have the right to bitch about people like me.

Howdy All,

I have two that come to mind instantly.  The "Long Riders", very period sounding guitar work by Ry Cooder.  But my favorite is "The Big Country".  The AMC channe lmovie guy/host called it instantly recognizable.

Panhead Pete

The Elderly Kid

For sheer, over-the-top bombast, "How the West Was Won." But I really love the score to "The Wild Bunch," especially the haunting music as the camera pans over the shot-up town after the climactic gunfight, with the wind blowing and Deke Thornton sitting on the ground at the town gate. Also, the use of period Mexican songs like "La Golondrina" and "Adelita" was outstanding.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Theme has to be my all time favorite. You just can't beat the Clint Eastwood spaghetti western's themes.

I agree that its probably the most easily-recognized Western theme.  Recognized, that is, AS a Western theme.  Probably the most recognizable theme, though, is The Magnificent Seven.  That's because, as 4 T Rod mentioned, it became the theme song for Marlboro cigarettes.

Mogorilla

Had the them to the MAgnificent Seven as my ring tone on my first Cell phone.  Problem was I never wanted to answer it, just let it play out.   My vote goes the Magnificent Seven with the good the bad and the ugly 2nd.

If you haven't seen All The Pretty Horses, then get the soundtrack for it. It's a soundtrack that's very haunting and beautiful.
Track 1, Cowboy's Dream just recently became one of my favorites. ;)
A work in progress.

FEATHERS

My favorite for a western (eastern) is from The Last of the Mohicans with Daniel Day Lewis.Feathers

Anytime Leone paired up with Morricone on a movie, that's when their talents really resonated.
A work in progress.

Believe it or not, that melody was first used in the theme song of Red River, another John Wayne classic.  Both movies were directed by Howard Hawks, and both music scores were by Dmitri Tiompkin.

 8)  THANKS, NIGHTEYES! NOW I KNOW WHICH MOVIE TO LOOK FOR ON PAYDAY ;D
