blade steels

i have been looking at sites selling knife blades and knife making kits. several different steels are mentioned- 440c,6a,8a,vanadium.etc. could someone with knowleges of the different steels and advantages of each
expound a little and give some practical advice to someone who is getting the itch to make a knife but knows diddly squat
about it.

Interesting post, but it explains the old time steels, not the modern alloys.

MD, just google those types and you should get the info you want.
