How soft?  Intelligent buttox answer-Tan It.   in reality, I would say it will never be leather soft, but the more it is worked, the more flexible it becomes.  I made a Native american quirt, My post on it should be a few pages back.  To get the whip portion of the quirt flexible, I smacked the post in my garage repeatedly for days, it is a very bad post!    the whip portions are more flexible than before, but still stiff.  The post is due for more punishment.  Also, rub a little neatsfoot oil in.

Ned, I coated some rawhide real heavy with Lexoil conditioner, and it's stayed soft for a couple years now, I can't tell you how long it will last, but so far so good, I use Lexoil on most everything I make as a first step after dyeing, Hope this helps. :D
