Here are a few of my favorite things .

I don't deer hunt, but I need to build a couple of knives for two Eagle Scouts next year.  What size / length blades are those?  A link to something you would use for skinning etc on Track of the Wolf or Crazy Crow would be helpful.

I have a couple of decent deer horns to use as the handle.  I'm GUESSING that I don't want a huge guard, but I don't KNOW what length and curve blade I should get.

I've only built one tang bladed knife, but I did learn a few things from that experiment.

The two large hunting knives have a 7 1/2 inch blade . They are what I like but you might want a smaller blade a 41/2 to 5 inch blade work great . I like a guard on my knives , but that needs to go with the blade . Smokey Mountain knife Works has lots of knives to look at  . Good Luck .

I'll post a picture of the ones I think are candidates.  My plan is to use 5-6 inch blades, with a small guard.  I may use a one sided guard.  I have a couple of antlers to use as handles.

The 5 inch blade is a nice size blade . It will handle skinning jobs with no problem . What type of metal are you planning on using carbon steel , stainless , or Damascus .

I'm open on metal type.  It's a gift to a friend's kids for Eagle scout.  I have to make two SIMILAR knives.  I have antler and that's it.  Which do you suggest and why??

I'll offer my opinion...I like carbon steel blades in my knife projects. My knives are geared to be 19th century American west. Therfore, point (1) Authentic material - becasue that was the most common material (didn't have stainless, and damascus blades were not common) (2) I can age a finished carbon blade after polishing by coating with ketchup or other mild food acidic (authenic look). (3) A carbon blade is flexible - therefore you see it tending to flex/bend before it breaks (durable material), (4) Sharpens easily and holds an edge as well, or better than the others. (5) Low cost - best bang for your buck.

You'll find a vast array of ready-made blades available online, and custom shops that will cut blanks to your specifications.

My personal favorite knives are the general utility or "camp" blade. I use mine for deer hunting/skinning and around the campfire/kitchen as well (after washing).

Thanks for your input on the knives . How was your Hunting season , are you a coyote hunter ? They can be a real challenge to hunt .

I only try to hunt coyotes 
Skunked out calling them earlier in the season. Weather hasn't cooperating lately.

Only one I saw this season was on my last deer drive. He walked out in front of me at 50 yds or so, stopped and looked over his shoulder. I was concerned at first that it could be a neighbor's dog....for about 3-4 seconds...then I dropped a buckshot round in my shotgun while he lit out. His hide would be mine if I had my yellowboy carbine and my standard CAS load.

The local guys referred to them lately as "wolves" cause they must be cross-bred with something big & black...maybe a cow. Just a few years ago the ones I used to see were a light orange & white. Anyway, I hesitated and didn't get him....maybe next time.

Anything your way?..if not I'll run them over to ya Rowdy..

Hope the weather will cooperate next weekend . Would love to do a little Coyote Hunting . I think the wind has blown 40 mph for the last month . I did take my pistol out today  , fired a few rounds . I think I'm getting cabin fever .

Today we had a HEAT wave the temp got to 19 . I seen 3 Tom's out feeding in a corn field . Then after lunch we watched 2 coyotes out looking for dinner . To bad I was working , should of been coyote hunting . Hope to try it Saturday .

Got a chance to go Coyote Hunting over the weekend . I seen 3 coyotes at about 400 yards .  So I never pulled the trigger on my 73 . The weather was cold and snow . The snow was falling on Sunday afternoon , looked like a scene from the White Buffalo .

The Turkeys are out feeding in the snowy fields . You can see them about a mile away . Last week there was a group of birds in a corn field seemed to be about 50 of them . Hope the Spring season is good .

Got a chance to burn a little powder yesterday . I sat several targets up yesterday , then shoot them down as fast as possible . My favorite target is a 4 inch piece of 2x4 . I like using small targets and mixed distances . Hope everyone has had a chance to shoot a few rounds lately .

Well the 2013 hunting season is over , hope everyone had a successful season . Hope your plans are gearing up for 2014 season . Today we are having another ice storm ,when will this winter end .
