Have you made any Jerky yet . We have almost ate the first batch of Jerky . Hope I have enough to finish Rifle season out . We stocked up our camp food today , will leave out tomorrow . We love cooking over the fire , we also like cooking baked Potato's in the fire . A Hot Sweet Potato with brown sugar and butter , it makes me Hungry just thinking about it . Oh and how can I forget the hickory smoked Steaks  , or Tenderloin .

Rowdy I am working on the Jerky now. I cant make it fast enough for my girls. We all like the jerky the best. I grind my own pork&deer sausage also. I think you are right about the camp cooking. My Brother and I love to cook and have a cool one around the campfire . Sounds like you are ready to go. I will spend Thanksgiving with the family and then head out to the ranch for the two wk. Mule Deer season. Was at my cabin last wk. getting it ready for season. Was very nice weather in the canyon country .  The spring on my ranch is flowing good. Deer ,Bear ,Coyote ,Mt. Lion tracks all over .My cabin is about 3.5 mi. north of the Rio Grand and Old Mexico. Big Mule Deer & Javelina down there . Hope I get one with my C. Sharps . Gonna give it a try . Dusty.

Dusty:
Watch your back trail.  3.5 miles north of Mexico is not the safest place in the US these days.  Good Luck on your hunt.

My muzzle loader deer success  on 11-13-2012. I lack period dress, but enjoy the period rifle and hunt. Black-tail deer taken in the Oregon coast range. Will be making burger, sausage and backstrap steaks out of him.

Dusty Texan,
Thank you,
It's a Lyman Great Plains Rifle. I'm shooting a 50 cal ball ahead of 80 grains of 2F Swiss black powder. The deer was shot at 60 yards.

congradulations on everyones kill. glad to see other people are having good luck. i have been jinks  so far this year, but there still a month and a half left of deer season so i'm sure my luck will change.
i bought a new camp house this year and this season is the first year to be in it. i have been really enjoying staying in it.  seeing hows its just me now days i'm thinking real hard about just staying there. wouldn't be nothing to think about if i had running water there

BB,
How close are  you to a stream? There is always the possibility of a well, if you can get a drill truck in that is. There is always hand digging, but that too much like work.
That ol buck is just waiting out there for you.

This is a vintage picture (probably 1970 or 71') of my first deer with my first rifle. The rifle is a 45-70 Remington Rolling Block I bought off a co-worker for $125. That little forked horn wasn't any monster buck, but it felt like it to me at the time.   JW

Thanks for showing us that shot from the past JW. It made me remember my first fork horn.I would drag him until I got tired and stop and stare at him and drag some more .Now my stops on a deer drag are longer the bucks are usually bigger but not as exciting as draging that forky. Dusty.

Cliff Fendley

Nice photo Jack Wagon.

My first buck with a bow was a little fork horn. Back in them days any buck was a prize. Now we let ones that put them to shame walk hoping they get even bigger.

Hey Rowdy , I'm packed up and heading out to the ranch in the morning, partner got better and we will be at the ranch tomorrow eve. Gonna start hunting Thursday. Got the old Sharps shooting pretty good and feel confident in my rig. If I have some luck I will post when I get back in ten or twelve days . Cant get any recption down on that part of the border . Total wilderness down there. Cant wait. Like stepping back into the old west ,for a while . Talk when I get back. Dusty.

Dusty
Good luck on your Hunt . I wish I was with you . Sounds like a wonderful time . Hunting in Texas , with a Sharps rifle it doesn't get any better than that . We need a Video from that part of the World , Pure Vintage Hunting . How are you fixed for a camp Cook ?
Do you have any cabins in good enough shape to stay in . I can sleep on the ground next to the fire .
