Well, I'll add a little here.

As many of you already know, I'm pretty much a city boy ... but I'm tryin' to correct that.

Last year, I had the good fortune to be invited to go deer hunting with my pard Jed Cooper (Dave Hollandsworth).  My first deer hunt.  I was dressed just as if I were going to the National shoot (plus the obligatory safety orange) and I had nearly 40 grs of pure Black pushin' 250 grs of soft lead out the barrel of my (Uberti) 1866 Winchester Sporting Rifle.  I was ready.

Now this tale would be much better if I had actually gotten a deer, but alas, I didn't even see one.  I DID see a dog, but ... he was safe from me.  I didn't (wouldn't) shoot him.

But I sure had fun!

Sounds like you had a GOOD time .Maybe next year will be your year to see that big ole monster buck . ;D ;D

Got a good whitetail buck last weekend. Dropped him after he got up and ran. The "vintage" aspect of my hunt is that I walk around & shoot game using a smooth-bore shotgun, open sights, while standing on my hind legs.

Unfortunately, many vintage firearms would not be legal under the rules around here. I could use any rifle I'd like in the late January season. By that time, most deer hereabouts have moved to the big timber. Our seasons get started a bit later than most states and your limited to hunting ONE normal firearm season.

Glad to hear some of you have more options, even if you seem to have less deer available  ;D

Regards,
Slim

Update on my attempt to get BPCR rifles approved for deer hunting in Indiana...... the response from the DNR is that a decision on allowing BPCR rifles will be made by the end of February. I would guess thats when they issue the 2010 season rule book for hunting. They never did ask about minimum calibers, black powder only, rifle-caliber lever guns etc. etc. Lord only knows what they might come up with on this! ???  I certainly hope they do the right thing, but I can't help but think they may not. If I hear anymore from them I'll get a post on here as soon as it happens. Good Hunting! ;D

I'm not much of a hunter anymore, so I'm not up on the hunting laws in Texas.  I remember that you were not allowed to hunt with a .223 rifle. I don't know if that is still in effect. I think we still have a Bow season before the regular Deer hunting season.

I came across a new piece of hunting gear that is Great . I was in need of a hunting cap that would keep my ears warm . I ordered a Railroad Cap from beaver brand hat co. When I got the cap  it was similar to a cap my grandfather was wearing in a picture from the late 1890's .
Now my Biggest problem is keeping my feet warm the ole time boots look great BUT they won't keep my feet warm . My danner's work great . Any suggestion for warm feet and period correct . HELP

I have a Wool military trench coat ? that I have been wearing while I hunt , it's great and was a bargain . I purchased it from Sportsman guide for $29.00 . If your in the market for a WARM  winters coat that's cheap on the wallet Here you go .

Steel Horse Bailey

A LOT of those surplus Military coats  from SG are good bargains.  Just watch out: one of us former Cold War sojers may have flashbacks and start preppin' to fire, if yer wearin' some former ComBlock clothing!

Off topic but I must admit as a Marine I always preferred close air to artillery.  Just something about hearing the voice crackling in your radio..."coming in HOT"  and seeing a couple of F-4s coming in just over the tree line :)

Get Some!!
