How many NCOWS members are Hunters ? I know that some of our members enjoy hunting with Cowboy guns . And some members even use Black Powder Cartridges and enjoy looking the part of the Hunters from the 1870-1899 . This would add a little extra spice to the Shootist with a monthly article on Vintage Hunting ?

Vintage hunting. No, no..., the clothing and rifle are new - it's the hunter that is vintage.



Before the economy went south I would hunt each fall in the hole-in-the-wall country west of Kaycee. Often I would use a BP cartridge rifle, spent the night in a my cowboy teepee and eat poorly. I always butchered my own deer. Most folks in Michigan seem to pay someone else to do it for them. The sooner I shot a deer would mean the sooner I would get to go to Cody and stay the rest of the time at the IRMA.

A timely subject Rowdy. I just got a reply today from the DNR as how to proceed in petitioning them to get BPCR rifles allowed for deer hunting here in Indiana.  Actually, I haven't got the procedure yet, just an acknowledgement that they will forward my request to the top guy at DNR.  I always wondered why an inline muzzleloader shooting a plastic saboted bullet with some sort of pelletized powder(not black) was acceptable but an original Sharps in say 45-70 was not.    Another example is the sabot shotgun round of a 300grain ballistic-tipped jacketed bullet at 2000 fps.. ..how can that be safer to use than my old 500grain cast bullet plodding along at 1350 fps??? Maybe we can get this changed for next years deer season, sure gonna try.

     Shame on you TJ !!!!!!!    I was thinkin the same thing this year with my Marlin in 45 but didn't get it done in time.


        Nice photo James,  maybe with an 'ol buffler gun you wouldn't feel so "vintage".

I plan on filling my Doe tag tomorrow . And yes I will be in proper Vintage Hunting attire . The day I shot the Buck I was scouting after work in preparation for the next day when all of a sudden THERE HE WAS . I shot him and the adventure began . He ran straight for the SWAMP . I tracked him to where I found him laying in the edge of the water so I pulled him out of the water and then got on my cell phone and called a friend and ask him to come and haul him out of the bottoms with his four wheeler . The shot I made on the Deer was a neck shot but a little low . I like a neck shot because if you hit the spine there is no tracking and that is a good thing . The Deer was at 50 yards which is about as far as you can see through the woods after last years ICE STORM .

i shot a doe & a 5 point buck this year with my 66 yellow boy in  44-40.  both deer were shot with a 2oo g mav duthman boolit on top of 30-33 grains of 2 ff.  both were about 30-40 yards, both deer took 2 rounds .  boolits not recovered.  neather one left a good blood trail . i allmost didnt find the doe , it was just luck as i had no trail to follow. the buck went 50 yards & piled up after 2 nd shot. i was disapointed not to find boolits as one didnt exit the deer but seemed to dicentregrate when it hit the front shoulderas i found a lot of lead piceses.
next year i plan to try my trap door in 45-70

Well Deer Season for the Rifle Hunter  is over . Muzzle loader season starts next saturday . If I get the chance I plan on hunting . I still have a doe tag to use . Would be nice to have a doe to make summer sausage out of . Be safe and Good Luck

This Saturday Muzzle loader season comes in . Plan on taking my old smoke pole and trying to fill my doe tag . Will try to take a few pictures . Hope everyone is having a safe and FUN filled hunting season .

Rowdy, our ML season ends today here in WI. We tried a few days of hunting it, but deer were scarce around my place after the regular gun season ended just prior. Hope you have good success!
