What about Danger close .

With napalm if you can't feel the heat it ain't close enough.

Doctor Bob
Well maybe a red neck thing ? I prefer a Hammered double with a black powder loaded 12 gauge shell .
Ole Tom turkey doesn't know the difference between smokeless or black .
The FUN thing about Vintage Hunting is trying to relive the adventures of our forefathers . Some people may call it living History
the main thing is to be safe and have FUN . What's your opinion on Vintage Hunting what type of gun and ammo do you prefer ?

I make a few struts through the countryside each year with a vintage-type gun (but my modern cothing). I have a few original doubles plus pumps/lever action shotgun & made a couple boxes of BP loads with #4 shot & "O" buckshot. Have dropped a number of crows, pigeons & other pesky critters down at the farm. Hard to find pheasants anymore...seems the Turkeys have taken over. Mght do a turkey hunt someday. BP slug loads are a possibility someday. The coyotes are out there, but often come out of the brush wher I can't see them...need my son to help me corral one.

Using vintage clothes could pose a problem in they'd probably get torn-up pretty well given the enviroment I hunt. Warm vintage boots & gloves would be an issue for me too. My feet get cold if I'm not wearing heavy pac-boots during most of the cold months...my hands are a bigger problem & all these guns have manual hammers and levers to operate & fit the gloved hand in.

HAppy hunting,
Slim

Rowdy, For keeping the feet warm. Get a pair of war Between the States treckers from Hamilton's. They come a little big and wide. When it is really cold and I wear my wool blues, I wear those shoes. Two pair of really warm or wool socks. This will be the ticket. Tj

Well I guess it is a little earlier than Cowboy times but I shot a 6 point buck with a .54 cal flintlock rifle during Ohio's gun season.  Used a patched .530 round ball, 80 grains of Goex 3f and an english flint for ignition.  Sort of stopped all of the Daniel Boone Jokes that I listened to at lunch time.

That's exactly what I call Vintage Hunting .Congratulations on your Buck . Thanks for sharing your photo . Have you made any Jerky yet ?  ;D ;D ;D

During muzzle loader season I carry my 1858 Remington for an up close shot and a fifty cal. rifle for those farther away.

When I want to do a vintage hunt during modern firearms season I don't take a cowboy action gun but I take a model 94 carbine in 32 special. Since I've always got a handgun on me I hate to be carrying a rifle in a handgun caliber also.

I wish we were allowed to use rifles in Ohio.  Most of the shots that I have are within 50 yards, I think a lever gun in .44 mag or .45 colt would be just the ticket.

Fellows – Though neither Maria and I bagged anything, here is a picture of her and I made on my wetplate set-up just before we went vintage hunting last Fall in south central Michigan. We hunted for a bit on state land adjoining a living history event where she and I set up as Victorian era sporting hunters.

Our wall tent in the background of above photograph is furnished early to mid 1880s, the shotguns are period to the era - of course we had BP shot shells, the period sporting outfits we made and are documented to the late 1870s per catalog illustrations in my case and a carte de visite in Maria's.

Though we didn't get any small game I thought I'd post the picture as a reminder of our 2010 vintage hunting experience. We're planning on doing it again this Fall. Wish us luck!

Took my '76 out last week and did some sighting in and refresher shooting to get ready for this deer season. She performed pretty well at 80 yards with 3" groups the norm. Next week the '86 Browning gets a refresher shoot/sight in session - just in case I need a little more ooompfff with the 45/70 loadings, but I don't see it as being necessary ;D

Kayleen

For almost 12 years now I have gone deer hunting with my shotgun that I use for cowboys/girls. Out of those 12 years I can tally 14 deer.( One that won a spot on my wall.)  I love the hunting season and thank God for kids that tolerate their  Mother and mother-in-law.
Be safe and good luck to all.

Ima Sure Shot

I got a squirrel with my front stuffer black powder 12 gauge double.  French Jack said it died of smoke inhalation!!!!
