Well Turkey season is in full swing . I killed a nice Tom today . The TTN 1878 reached out to 52 steps to lay him down . Not to bad for a Black Powder load . Will post  picture later . Nice big bird weighed about 25 lbs ,had a 9 1/2 inch beard and 1 1/4 spurs .

That's great Rowdy! I'm chomping at the bit because I'm still recovering from neck surgery and not allowed to shoot anything with recoil. I'll be missing out on spring turkey this year.

Looking forward to the pics.

The Black Powder shotgun shells were the key to my success . They have to keep a excellent pattern at a long distance . For turkey hunting i load #6 and I have a few shells loaded with # 5's . I use Federal paper hulls which crimp great . As for powder I use Goex have been experimenting between 2f and 3f . The bird I killed over the weekend was with 3f .

I patterened my old double 12 hammer gun with the Goex loaded paper shell's you sent me. Was really impressed with the result's at 50 paces. Had good pattern's in the tight barrel and the improved one. Managed to get three big Rio ,Tom's for the hunter's and they missed a couple chances at wild hog. Hunted for me one morning and had two Jake's come in ,passed on them in wait for an old Tom. Again congratulation's on your success Rowdy. I better get back out there and beat the brush......Dusty

Well the weather has cooled down , will try for another bird this weekend . Hope the next bird doesn't roll in the creek . The last Bird I shot managed to flop off the bank and into the creek , I guess the Black Powder smoke was to much for him . I slid down the Creek bank and picked him up and the nerves kicked in to flopping and he almost drown me . Well I will be out there trying for another Tom early tomorrow morning .

Good Luck on Ya Rowdy .Should be a little cool tomorrow . Hope you have a good hunt. Let us know how it goes. I'll be headin out next wed. for another go at the Rio Grande's and wild hog. This time just me and the bird's. Caint wait. I'll say a little good luck prayer ,fer Ya in the Mornin.......Dusty.

The flood water had me up a creek . I aint swimin to the other side . I seen a strange sight , a hawk after a Turkey ,they were making all kind of noise . I was a hoping the hawk could drop the Tom on my side of the Creek and in shotgun range , but that didn't happen .

Rowdy aint nothin wrong with a little R&R . Naw hadn't any luck yet.Been doin town duties but headin out to the Ranch later this wk. plannin on doin a little huntin ,around the two gates need replacin and gettin some cattle moved around. Dont know about up yonder but down here the rattler's are on the move. Need to cary my 45 Colt's this time cause have some shot load's for the 45. Spring is the worst time fer snakes . I kill more in spring than any other time. I better get on an old Tom soon round here most hen's are already settin a nest.Them hog's dont ever give it a break so they may get a little attention this time .......Dusty

I wasn't able to Hunt this weekend . I went to a Wedding out of town . Had a niece get married , so we did the family thing .

Turkey season goes out May the 5th , and I am on call this weekend . So my spring hunt is over . I was able to take at least one Tom this Spring so can't complain . We have time to test our loads now for the up coming seasons in the Fall . I have a excellent load worked up for my 44wcf using Swiss BP . I enjoy hunting with the 44wcf , it seems that   everyone wants a 300 magnum to kill a whitetail deer at 50 yards . I enjoy woods hunting and most of my shots are fairly close , 80 yards or less . Now with a 44wcf cranked up to 1300 fps it works great . I started using Vintage Hunting Guns because I was really into Cowboy shooting . Used to shoot every Saturday somewhere . So was always shooting these weapons so decided to start Hunting with them .Now before you say hunting and Cowboy loads they are 2 different animals your right .I used a   hotter load to hunt with . That way I don't destroy the targets at a match . Hope everyone had a safe and successful Turkey season .

Rowdy I have got a last chance hunt commin up this week. The spring turkey season for Rio Grande's end's on the 12th of May. Have been under the weather this past week and couldnt go. Goin to give it a try on tue. or so. You are right there is a big difference in a bp. huntin load and a cowboy load or plinkin load. I have seen people step back after standin next to my 45-75 bp. or my 45-120 sharps when it goes of ,it's funny to see the starteled face when they hear the roar from a gun they thought was just goint to go pop.Hopin to get a Turkey and wild hog . Glad that you got a Tom Turkey up yonder in Kintuck.I know wood's huntin is some kinda difficult. My hat is off ta ya Rowdy. Look forward to doin some load development ,durin the off season , for my 45-75 my Sharps 45-120 ,and my bp hammer double . If I have some luck I'll post a pic. when I get back. When I'm out younder I am outa touch with the modern world. Thinkin that's what I like about it the most.Go draw water fer your coffee, listen to the coyote gather call while ya wait on the pot ta drip in the mornin, and a coal oil lamp at night on the porch listnen to the coyote sang goodnight, while somthin is cookin on the mesquite fire.Life is good...........Dusty
