I finally snagged up a 1887 shotgun , but a 20 inch barrel ? Hope to have a 30 inch barrel installed for Turkey hunting . Any suggestions ?   Does anyone know of someone that had this done . She is a norinco , wish she was a winnie .

Howdy there Rowdy ,have you had a chance to pattern that 87 yet? That twenty " may do perty good. Finally gettin to head out west soon,so I'll be gettin to try out that BP. shotgun load you sent me. And my .44 colt OT. If I can, gonna try the .44 colt OT on a wild hog. Gettin on to spring down here ,the Gobbler's are worked up , been gobblin for a couple wk. now . Think they open the spring season a little late. But not complanein ,it run's six wks. from March 30th into May 12th. Still putin my Vintage Huntin Kit together . Dusty.

The plan for tomorrow is go SHOOTING . I plan on shooting my 44wcf loads from Powder Inc. and my 12 gauge BP also . I will try the 1887 but not expecting much . With a 20 inch barrel and no full choke , no way it can perform at any distance .

What would be better (or cheaper) a new full choke barrel or choke tubes? Tj

I shot my 87 today and had the smoke rolling . but the short barrel won't reach out there and kill Turkeys . But if I could get a set of choke tubes for it that would help .

Also tried the new powder from Goex Olde Eynsford , the first test wasn't to impressive at all .  :'( :'( :'(

Rowdy,

I watched a video about hunting turkey with a air/pellet rifle.
While this kind of a challenge appeals to may sportsmanship, when I squeeze the trigger, I really prefer bring home the meat.
Choke inserts maybe the least expensive "reach out there" and ge them method for your '87.
It is not quite the same as a long barreled variation, is it?

The Olde Eynsford is lighter can only get like 32 grains in a case where the Swiss got 35 grains . The velocities were slower also , the 2f was about 1150 ish and the 3f was at about 1250 . Now the fouling was bad after 20 rounds , now keep in mind this is with the Powder Inc. bullets which hold a small amount of lube . Now this was my first testing of this powder . Will talk to Jerry after work Monday to try and figure out the next step . If you was using a bullet that held more lube there would be less fouling .

Was wanting a hunting cap of the era . I was looking at old photographs and found a style that would be great for cold weather hunting . It looks like the Elmer Fudd hunting cap that had the tied up ear flaps . I have looked on line and can't find what I want . When you look up EF hunting cap ,they pop up as a leather cap with ear muffs . The old pictures I have seen look to be like a carhart material . Who makes caps ???
Wish I had purchased a hat from the vendor at the Convention . I liked the bobcat hat and the beaver was nice also .

Rowdy, How about seeing if Jerry would donate a couple pounds of that new powder for the National. Tj

Rowdy,

The Elmer Fudd's characters cap was supposed to be the famous Filson hunting cap. Filson has been known since the late 1800's for their quality work and hunting clothes. That hat is called a Mackinaw wool hunting cap.

My good friend was a Filson dealer until recent years after they started having some of their products made in China.

I don't know if they still offer it in the red and black plaid but just Google "Filson Mackinaw wool cap", you'll probably find it.

I can say from first hand experience they are very warm.

I found it , But they are similar to a cap from the 1800's . Still not exactly what I want . Shotgun Steve posted some Hunting pictures and I noticed a few hunters wearing caps with furry looking ear muffs .

Rowdy,

Here is the Double Mackinaw hat with the furry flaps. http://www.filson.com/products/double-mackinaw-cap.60041.html?fromCat=true&fvalsProduct=mens/hats-and-caps&fmetaProduct=1011

I wear the Filson Wilfowl cap when hunting. The Tin Cloth repels water and it has the Mackinaw wool lining for warmth. The buckled part will slide down over your ears on the sides and back or you can bring it all the way down with the buckle at your chin. Just depends on the temperature.http://www.filson.com/products/tin-cloth-wildfowl-hat.60063.html?fromCat=true&fvalsProduct=mens/hats-and-caps&fmetaProduct=1011

Go to Filsons website, most of their stuff is still here in the good ole USA, it is pricy but I can vouch it is high quality. I have a bunch of Filson gear thanks to one of my best friends being a dealer for many years so I could get it at dealer cost.

We both sport our Filson gear mostly when we are waterfowl hunting, he has one of the "Fudd" hats as we call it but it has to be down right cold for our area before he brings it out. When it gets down around single digits he will show up and say "had to break out the ole Fudd hat today" ;D

Thanks for the info I really appreciate it . Turkey season is almost here . I have a stormy Kromper in grey wool nice cap and it works pretty good . may have to use it if the weather is cold and crappy in early Turkey season . I have my old TTN 1878 shotgun ready to hunt Turkey . I have a great black powder 12 gauge load ready to SMOKE some Turkeys .

Cliff Fendley

Sounds great Rowdy, go get em.

I'm not going to be able to Turkey hunt this spring because of my neck. The Doc hasn't given me the go ahead to do much lifting or shooting any guns at all much less something with recoil.

Sorry to hear that you will be sitting Turkey season out . I am planning on hunting opening day , have the ole double barrel ready to go .   wish I could get a long barrel for that Norinco 1887 . Oh well maybe I can have it for the fall season .

Today I watched a pair of Tom's . They had the Hens in sight and were putting on a real show strutting around and gobbling . Next Saturday is opening day of Turkey hunting . I will have my old Doubled barrel ready , plan on smoking the woods up . Wild Turkey is Excellent eating .

Today was an Excellent day . Had a chance to pattern my shotgun ( 1878 ) At 40 yards . Pattern was good so I am ready to hunt down a couple Turkeys . If I get a nice Tom on opening day I might try to take  the second bird with the short barreled 1887 ,   he will have to be close . Good Luck and Happy Hunting .
