Today I  fixed a large batch of jerky . The dehydrator came with 4 racks and I purchased 2 more . So today was the largest batch I have fixed . It turned out OK but it still lacks something ? I have one recipe that calls for some brown sugar . When you google jerky it comes up with lots of recipes . Now to tweak them to my liking . I thought a touch of brown sugar and red pepper might be a interesting taste ?

Blair

Rowdy,

Try dissolving some brown sugar and chill powder, salt and black pepper (to taste) in some Jack Daniel's "Black Jack". Glaze the jerked meat with this several time before fully jerked/dried. Workes well in grilling and bbq. Save the left over Glaze. It wont spoil.
Just a thought?

Thanks , the next time I fix Jerky I will work with that recipe . I enjoy a couple slices of jerky for a snack . I purchased a jerky cannon a couple years ago . It works like a caulking gun , real simple to use . Makes nice strips of jerky for the Dehydrator . I thaw the meat out add my mix of ingredients let set up for a day then dehydrate .

Yesterday I came upon a large flock of Turkeys . That got me to thinking about Turkey season . That's about 6 weeks out . This winter is slipping right on by . I was hoping to have a 1887 repeating shotgun for this Turkey season but that ain't going to happen .I will be using my ole 1878 with the 26 inch barrels . I have killed Turkey with it in the past and it has always done a Excellent job.But that has a lot to do with my black powder ammo . The ammo is from Powder Inc. and is a Heavy load that we have developed for Turkey Hunting . The paper hulls work real good with the black powder load .

Howdy there Rowdy ,I am lookin forward to turkey season here in Tx. You are allowed four Rio Grand Turkey per license yr.I still have three tag's for this spring, took one in the fall. Gonna use my .45 cal. caplock front stuffer and round ball.Been wantin to use a old double 12 ga. hammer gun I have think it is around 1880 's model. Bore's look great and it locks up tight. Even has some case color showing on the lock's. Point me in the right direction for gettin some Black Powder load's for it . Think it deserves a trip out huntin again ,dont you ?One more thing NOTICE I SAID RIO GRAND TURKEY ---------NOT EASTERN TURKEY . I think you can only take 1 of them  per license  yr. I dont ever hunt in east Tx. not up on that huntin there . ........Dusty.

Rowdy here is the start of my vintage turkey huntin outfit 12 ga. shotgun and old cedar box call from my late Father who taught me to hunt .The little turkey feather  and the box call are for luck. ....Dusty.

I use a box call and have had good luck using it . Have you ever used a wing bone call . I have only read about these , I guess they were the diaphragm call  of old times . I enjoy being in the woods in the early morning , as everything is waking for the day . The sounds sights and smells of the early morning are always worth the effort . To sit up for a Turkey , call him in range to take with a old double barrel shotgun using black powder . That is the ultimate fun and Excellent eating afterwards .

Rowdy I have watched my old Daddy use a wingbone call way back yonder. He would make em .We used the old cedar box call for yrs. Then somtime in the 70's we started on the mouth diaphram call's . Bought the kit's and made em ourselves ,that's when we were Hi Tec.. I have to say the mouth diaphram is to me ,easier to use ,and hand's free. I'm using the old cedar box , just to have part, of my old Huntin Pard along again ......Dusty.

And Rowdy your rite about the early mornin sounds and smell's . Aint nothin like hearin all them Turkey's cackel then flap down off the roost and start the ear shatterin Gobble . My little Daughter when she hunted with me ,would listen to them gettin ready to come of the roost and sing to me ,Aint Commin Down Till The Sun Comes Up . Huntin with your Kids and Grandchildren is Top's ......Dusty.

I know what you mean about the diaphram calls . Makes for less movement . When you get that ole Gobbler all fired up and he comes running in , if that doesn't excite you nothing will . And I will have my favorite diaphram call in my pocket just in case .

dusty texian

Just dont tell me you used it LOL . ....jUST PULLIN YOUR CHAIN ......Dusty

Rowdy Fulcher

Dusty
Have you tried not using a call but just your mouth , I am working on it BUT have a long way to go .

dusty texian

Do it all the time . My little Brother can talk to em like nobody's business . He wont use a call, just his mouth . Have to admit where we hunt they have a bunch of Turkey , but they aint dumb . I have friends in other States tell me it,s so easy cause we have a bunch of em . In a way they are rite . But you ever try to fool about 20 turkey's eyes that's 40 eye's Pard it Aint easy . .....Dusty

Another thing Rowdy Aint gonna use any CaMO I HATE THAT STUFF .It just aint for me . It aint hard to get em close in West Tx. it's movin once they are in range ...Dusty.

I have lots of Vintage Hunting clothes from 20 years of Cowboy shooting . I have a brain tanned buckskin shirt that I love to wear . That is my favorite hunting shirt . I have a set of elk skin pants that I wear some . The foot gear is boots ( buffalo runners ) and a pair of moccasins from Arrow . Now if I hunt in Texas may leave the moccasins at home ? But they sure are comfortable and you sure are quiet wearing them through the woods .
